With a shudder and scream Vanessa sat up in bed, her heart pounding in her chest. The room around her swam in and out of focus, the reality of the present moment slowly taking shape. She reached up to touch her left eye, the tender spot where the bone shard had lodged itself, a constant reminder of the torment she had endured. Her breathing came in ragged gasps as she tried to regain her composure.
The darkness of the night enveloped her room, the only illumination coming from the blue glow of the digital clock on her nightstand. It read 3:17 AM, a cruel reminder of the hours she had lost to the memories of her abuse that had invaded her sleep.
