The hunt had been brutal. Hours of driving. A motel that smelled like mildew. A nest of vampires that refused to die quietly. And more running, fighting, and bloodshed than you cared to think about. By the time you and Dean finally got back into the Impala, you were exhausted. Dean slid behind the wheel and started the engine. "You good?" You nodded from the passenger seat. "Yeah." "You sure?" "I'm fine, Dean." He gave you a quick look before pulling onto the highway. "Alright." The familiar rumble of the Impala filled the silence. You leaned your head against the window. At first, you tried to stay awake. You really did. You watched the lights passing outside. Listened to the radio playing quietly. Occasionally answered when Dean said something. But your eyes were getting heavier. Dean noticed. "You can sleep." "I'm not tired." Dean glanced at you. "You've yawned six times." "I have not." "You just did it again." You rolled your eyes. "I'm staying awake." "Sure you are." You tried. A few minutes later, your head slowly tilted toward the window. Your eyes closed. Dean looked over. You were completely asleep. He smiled faintly. "Called it." He turned the radio down. The Impala continued down the empty highway, the engine humming steadily beneath you. Every time the car hit a bump, your head shifted against the window. Dean frowned. After a few minutes, he reached over at a red light and gently adjusted the seat. You barely stirred. He pulled his jacket off and carefully draped it over you. "Get some sleep." You didn't hear him. You were already out. For once, Dean didn't mind the silence. He kept the music low. Drove a little slower. And made sure every turn was smooth enough that you wouldn't wake up. When Sam called, Dean answered quietly. "Where are you guys?" "On the way back." "How long?" Dean glanced over at you sleeping peacefully in the passenger seat. "Couple hours." Sam paused. "Is everything okay?" "Yeah." "Then why are you whispering?" Dean frowned. "I'm not whispering." "You are." Dean looked at you again. "...They're asleep." Sam immediately understood. "Oh." "Yeah." A small smile appeared in Sam's voice. "Don't wake them." "I wasn't planning to." Dean hung up. He looked over at you once more. You were curled slightly into his jacket, completely unaware of anything happening around you. Dean smiled to himself.
