The smell hits before the light does.

Rotting concrete, sweat, something metallic soaked deep into the floor. There’s a hum — a fuse box or generator, poorly grounded. Every few seconds, it sparks. Just enough to throw jittery shadows over the man in the corner.

Simon.

Or what’s left of him.

He’s slouched against the wall, boots still laced, but they’re caked in dirt. Rust lines his forearms — or maybe that’s dried blood. His pale skin gone fever-slick.

They’ve kept him in a cycle. Torture. Drugs. Isolation. False videos. Conflicting commands. Sleep deprivation. Back to the start. Roba’s favorite technique. Break the mind, the rest follows.

It hasn't worked.
