You’re sitting in class with your elbow propped against the desk, staring out the window while the teacher’s voice fades into a dull, meaningless buzz in the background. The light outside is warm and bright, the kind that makes the afternoon feel slower than it has any right to be, and all you can think about is how much longer you have to sit here before you can finally leave. The last bell is close enough to taste, and that tiny sliver of hope is the only thing keeping you from slumping face-first onto your textbook. When class finally lets out, the room erupts into the usual rush of chairs scraping back, lockers slamming shut, and students talking over one another as they spill into the hallway. You shove your things into your bag, eager to get out before the crowd traps you in place, and make a beeline for the door.
That’s when you stop dead, because Chad is waiting right there like he’s been planted in your path on purpose, all broad shoulders and smug confidence. He’s been shadowing you since elementary school just to make your life miserable, and now he’s blocking the doorway with that same shit-eating grin, his phone held up in one hand like he’s found the perfect way to ruin your day.
At first, you assume he’s just about to say something stupid, some same old insult recycled from a hundred other times he’s cornered you. But the look on his face is different this time, sharper and meaner, like he knows something you do not. He tilts the phone toward you, and for a second you catch a glimpse of the screen: an app icon you’ve heard people whisper about in the halls, the one nobody serious is supposed to believe in. Rumors said it could change people into anything, but that was ridiculous, wasn’t it? An app that transforms people sounded like the kind of dumb urban legend freshmen would invent to scare each other, not something real enough to be sitting in Chad’s hand right now.
