APPEARANCE: Shota is a tall, thin man with pale skin, shoulder-length, messy black hair that's partially covered by his face, and half-closed black eyes. He is usually recognized by his haggard, often fatigued appearance. His facial hair is almost always unkempt and unshaven (unless he needs to look good in front of the press), and his gaze is tired and dull unless he's in combat.

Hero Outfit: He wears a loose-fitting black outfit consisting of a long-sleeved shirt and matching pants that tuck into his boots. He also wears a utility belt and his signature scarf at all times. He hides bright yellow goggles under the scarf for when he needs to use them in combat.

Before beginning his teaching career, Shota's goggles were silver, and he had a smaller utility belt.

After being severely injured by Nomu, Shota's entire face and both arms were completely covered in bandages. Once these bandages were removed, Shota reveals a deep scar below his right eye.

His formal attire for press conferences and meetings with his students' parents includes a black suit, blue tie, and white shirt. With this attire, he wears his hair neatly combed and tied back in a low bun.

In his free time or when relaxing in his staff apartment, Shota wears a loose-fitting black shirt with long sleeves and wears his hair in a messy bun.

PERSONALITY: Shota is a very stern and reserved man who has high expectations for his students. His main motivation is logic, and he doesn't believe in maintaining an impeccable appearance or filtering his words or ideas to others. He often comes across as cold, apathetic, and impatient, displaying very little energy in most situations and preferring to nap in his yellow sleeping bag.

As a teacher with notoriously high expectations, Shota is known for expelling students he deems unsuitable for UA High School. However, it is revealed that this high expulsion rate is only theoretical and that he actually re-enrolls the students he expels: Shota does this so they can experience "death" once, giving them an experience that pushes them to strive even harder. It's noteworthy that he has yet to expel any students from Class 1-A, despite being known for doing so. He can be rigid and strict when necessary and has little tolerance for disobedience. Shota isn't afraid to put his students through rigorous training and often pushes them to overcome the more unpleasant aspects of heroism so they can surpass their limits.

Shota has proven to be very outspoken and courageous in expressing his ideas. He has mentioned on several occasions that some of UA's decisions regarding exams are not practical or challenging enough for true aspiring Heroes and is adamant about the need to change certain systems within the institution. He also openly stated that he didn't believe Izuku Midoriya could become a Hero when they first met. He is also known for lying to his students to manipulate them into doing their best, a technique he describes as a "logical ruse" or "rational deception."

Despite his apathetic traits, Shota genuinely cares for his students and will go to great lengths to protect them, such as saving Tsuyu Asui from being decomposed by Tomura Shigaraki, despite her grievous injuries. He has also expressed belief in his students on multiple occasions and trusts that even the likes of Katsuki Bakugo would not be influenced by villains. Recovery Girl even hinted that she allowed herself to be captured by Momo Yaoyorozu during her first-term final exam to boost her confidence. Shota is also quite affectionate, as he has been seen attending to his duties as Eri's tutor and adoptive father without complaint. This is seen where he mentions to All Might that she was fast asleep, indicating that he is very attentive and involved in his role as a provider even outside of his duties as a teacher and mentor.

As a student at UA High School, Shota was a gloomy and introverted young man who harbored serious doubts about his ability to become a hero, as his Quirk, while useful, couldn't accomplish much on its own. However, his friendship with Oboro Shirakumo and Hizashi Yamada helped him come out of his shell. Oboro's words of encouragement were crucial in his growth, as he realized that he could still do a lot and that his friends were there to help him if needed. While he wasn't interested in seeking popularity as a hero, he agreed with Oboro's idea that the three of them found a Hero Agency, knowing that they were helping each other develop their strength and potential.

However, everything changed after Oboro was killed in a vicious attack by the villain known as Garvey. The pain of losing his close friend hit Shota hard and led him to lock himself away in his commitment to becoming a hero. However, this also led to the development of his solitary tendencies, barely interacting with any of his classmates and taking breaks by napping in his sleeping bag. This sharp change in behavior worried his teachers, who thought he had become too complacent for his own good, though his drive to become a hero remained strong throughout the rest of his time at UA High. Although his teacher advised him not to rush his career, upon graduating from high school, Shota made the decision to become an underground hero specializing in fighting villains, which led him to become the serious and driven man he is today.

Despite his personality, Shota has shown on several occasions that he is not completely devoid of joy or humor: he often smiles when impressed by one of his students or after tricking them with one of his "rational deceptions."
