About the Demon Slayer World
The setting is the real world with the addition of Breathing Styles, Blood Demon Arts, and entities defined as "Demons."
Demons
Demons are former humans transformed either by Muzan Kibutsuji's blood or by an Upper Moon acting with his authorization. Muzan can sense, order, and revoke his blood from any Demon. Demons are fatally vulnerable to sunlight and burn to ash in approximately three seconds. Demons possess rapid regenerative ability enabled by consuming human flesh; regeneration can restore limbs and organs that humans cannot. Demons require human flesh and blood for sustenance and will vomit if they consume non-human food. Demons may use full-body coverings (e.g., umbrellas, masks, hoodies) to temporarily shield themselves from sunlight. Newly created Demons initially enter a period of violent predation driven by hunger, after which they regain cognitive function but typically retain only their name. Demons created by Muzan's blood can be controlled by Muzan, but they retain free will and can act independently; Muzan's influence can be counteracted by a specific medicine or if a human becomes a Demon through means other than Muzan's blood.
Demons are typically killed by decapitation with a Nichirin blade; incomplete decapitation allows regeneration. The anatomical neck area is a critical weak point but requires a proper Nichirin blade strike for mortality. Wisteria poison incapacitates and injures Demons but does not reliably kill them; some Demons may acquire resistance. A rare human blood type, Marechi (present in approximately 1 in 100,000 humans), is strongly attractive to Demons and can induce temporary frenzy in elite Demons. After extensive consumption of humans, some Demons develop a Blood Demon Art, a unique supernatural ability that scales with continued feeding. Demons' appearances range from near-human with minor traits (pale skin, unique pupils, faint markings) to humanoid with animal-like features (pronounced veins, small horns, sharp teeth, subtly pointed ears); grossly inhuman morphologies occur but are rare. Demons retain corrupted aspects of prior personalities and intelligence, permitting limited communication or integration with humans.
Demons can be created without Muzan via a potion derived from the Blue Spider Lily; this plant is extremely rare. Tamayo's medicine also enables Demon creation independent of Muzan. The Kamado bloodline produces atypical outcomes when transformed: Kamado-derived Demons adapt physiologically to eliminate the need to consume humans, can develop immunity to sunlight over a period of approximately two to three years, retain full pre-transformation memories immediately, and are not subject to Muzan's control.
The Twelve Kizuki
The Twelve Kizuki are Demons who received substantial portions of Muzan's blood. They are ranked one through six in Upper and Lower divisions; Upper Ranks are significantly stronger than Lower Ranks. Lower Moons display their rank in one eye; Upper Moons display rank kanji in both eyes and generally disdain Lower Moons. The Demon Slayer Corps has limited confirmed information about the Twelve Kizuki.
Demon Slayers
Demon Slayers are trained humans tasked with locating and killing Demons. Admission to the Demon Slayer Corps requires passing the Final Selection. The standard induction rank is Mizunoto, the lowest of ten ranks: Mizunoto, Mizunoe, Kanoto, Kanoe, Tsuchinoto, Tsuchinoe, Hinoto, Hinoe, Kinoto, and Kinoe. Promotion is obtained by completing missions and accruing combat experience. The Hashira are the Corps' highest operational tier; qualification requires the rank of Kinoe and either the confirmed slaying of fifty Demons or the killing of a member of the Twelve Kizuki. Hashira blades bear the title "Destroyer of Demons." A Tsuguko is a designated successor to a Hashira, selected either by application or scouting. The Corps operates as a secret entity without formal government sponsorship and is funded by its owner.
Final Selection
The Final Selection is administered annually when wisteria flowers bloom and ceases when they wilt. The test requires candidates to survive seven nights within a demon-infested zone isolated by surrounding wisteria, which is toxic to Demons. Approximately twenty candidates participate per exam; a minority typically survive. Oversight is provided by the Ubuyashiki family. Candidates who complete the Final Selection receive the standard uniform, choose ore for a Nichirin katana, and are assigned a Kasugai Crow for communication. During onboarding on Mount Fujikasane, a "Wisteria Engraving" procedure inscribes the recruit's rank on the mountain and may cause transient skin sensations. Recruits can check rank status later via a verbal password and a fist clench that causes a rank symbol to swell on the back of the hand.
Hybrids
Hybrids are individuals who possessed Breathing Styles prior to becoming Demons. Conversion into a Hybrid generally requires several days and a substantial volume of Muzan's blood. The prior Breathing Style often integrates into the resulting Blood Demon Art, modifying its form and function. Hybrids retain the standard vulnerabilities and requirements of Demons. Humans with Breathing Styles may also become Hybrids through Blue Spider Lily derived potions.
Timeline
Unwavering Resolve Arc (The Beginning): The narrative begins on December 28, 1913. On that date, Tanjiro Kamado's family is killed and his sister Nezuko is transformed into a Demon. Giyu Tomioka intercepts the aftermath, incapacitates Nezuko, and directs Tanjiro to seek training from Sakonji Urokodaki. By January 1914, Tanjiro begins formal training to become a Demon Slayer.
Final Selection Arc: From January 1914 to January 1916, Tanjiro trains under Sakonji Urokodaki, learning swordsmanship and Water Breathing; two mentor spirits, Sabito and Makomo, assist training. In late January 1916, Tanjiro participates in the Final Selection on Mount Fujikasane, survives the seven-night test, defeats the "Hand Demon," and becomes a Demon Slayer. He receives a Kasugai Crow and a Nichirin sword that turns black upon first drawing.
First Missions and the Asakusa Arc: By February 1916 Tanjiro undertakes initial missions. In March 1916 he encounters Muzan Kibutsuji in Asakusa, where Muzan is disguised in human form with a family. Tamayo and her apprentice Yushiro, both Demons independent of Muzan, form an alliance with Tanjiro to collect blood samples from powerful Demons for research toward a cure for Nezuko.
Tsuzumi Mansion Arc: In April 1916 Tanjiro meets Zenitsu Agatsuma and Inosuke Hashibira. The three investigate a mansion demon, Kyogai, who manipulates rooms via drum beats. They defeat Kyogai and form a team.
Mount Natagumo Arc: In May, June 1916 the team confronts the Spider Family led by Rui, Lower Rank Five. Tanjiro activates the Hinokami Kagura (Dance of the Fire God) and Nezuko awakens a Blood Demon Art, "Exploding Blood." Giyu Tomioka and Shinobu Kocho intervene; Tanjiro and Nezuko are taken into Demon Slayer custody.
Rehabilitation Training Arc: From late June to September 1916 Tanjiro and companions undergo recovery and Rehabilitation Training at the Butterfly Mansion, including instruction in Total Concentration: Constant.
Mugen Train Arc: By late September 1916 the trio assists Flame Hashira Kyojuro Rengoku against Enmu aboard the Mugen Train. They neutralize Enmu and save approximately 200 passengers. Subsequently Akaza (Upper Rank Three) engages and fatally injures Rengoku during sunrise.
Entertainment District Arc: Following a four-month recovery period, in January 1917 Tanjiro, Nezuko, Zenitsu, and Inosuke join Tengen Uzui to investigate an Entertainment District case. The antagonists are siblings holding the position of Upper Rank Six, Daki and Gyutaro. Tanjiro awakens his Demon Slayer Mark and Nezuko exhibits a berserk form. The siblings are killed, an outcome not seen in over a century.
Swordsmith Village Arc: Tanjiro is comatose for two months and awakes in March 1917. In April, May 1917 Swordsmith Village endures simultaneous attacks by Gyokko (Upper Five) and Hantengu (Upper Four). Muichiro Tokito (Mist Hashira) defeats Gyokko. During the conflict Nezuko is exposed to sunlight but survives, thereby developing immunity to sunlight and regaining speech; Muzan subsequently prioritizes Nezuko as a target.
Hashira Training Arc: In June 1917 the Corps implements an intensive, month-long Hashira Training regimen to prepare for a final confrontation.
Final Battle: Infinity Castle and Sunrise Countdown Arcs: The final confrontation begins at the start of July 1917. Kagaya Ubuyashiki sacrifices himself to lure Muzan and detain Demon Slayers within the Infinity Castle. Sequential engagements occur against remaining Upper Ranks. Notable outcomes include Shinobu Kocho's sacrifice related to Doma (Upper Two); Zenitsu's defeat of Kaigaku (Upper Six); Tanjiro and Giyu's defeat of Akaza (Upper Three); and a costly victory over Kokushibo (Upper One). Survivors advance to surface combat against Muzan. Muzan transforms Tanjiro into a Demon King in his final moments; Tanjiro's humanity is restored through a cure and intervention by allies.
Nichirin Katanas
Nichirin Katanas are blades forged from Scarlet Ore located on sun-exposed mountains and are used by Demon Slayers to kill Demons. Upon creation a Nichirin blade is gray until drawn by its first user; on first drawing the blade's color permanently changes based on the user, provided the user has sufficient skill. The blade does not change color again. The mechanism linking blade color and Breathing Styles is not understood. Known color associations include black for Sun Breathing; red for Flame; blue for Water; yellow for Thunder; green for Wind; gray for Stone; white for Mist; lavender-blue for Insect; light pink for Flower; lavender for Serpent; dark pink for Love; amber for Sound; indigo-gray for Beast; and light purple for Moon. Nichirin blades are intended to kill by striking the neck; decapitation with a Nichirin blade causes a Demon to disintegrate into ash.
Inherited Memories
Inherited memories are ancestral recollections that can manifest spontaneously in descendants or successors during conditions of high emotional stress, danger, or clarity. These memories may appear as dreams, visions, or intuitive knowledge and can include technical insights, techniques, or emotional content. Inherited memories are not consciously learned or controlled and can also occur in Demons as a result of Muzan's blood integrating with their physiology.
Total Concentration Breathing
Total Concentration Breathing is a regulated breathing technique that optimizes oxygen intake, elevates heart rate and blood flow, and increases core body temperature to enhance physical and cognitive performance. Practitioners experience improved strength, speed, reflexes, stamina, durability, and situational cognition enabling actions that approach Demon-level performance while remaining human. Mastery allows sustained application, including "Total Concentration: Constant," which maintains the elevated state even during sleep. Mastery also enables resistance to certain poisons and improved internal injury awareness but does not confer regenerative capabilities comparable to Demons. Training involves incremental lung-capacity exercises using expanding gourds, running, breath-holding, and meditation. Early training induces significant physiological discomfort including ear pressure, headaches, and chest pain. Recovery Breathing is a brief method used during exertion to restore function and reduce fatigue.
Breathing Styles
Breathing Styles are swordsmanship techniques powered by Total Concentration Breathing, all descending from Sun Breathing, created by Yoriichi Tsugikuni in the Sengoku era. Since no one could replicate his skill, Yoriichi reshaped his art into five core styles—Water, Flame, Thunder, Wind, and Stone.
Though Sun Breathing was forgotten, it survived in the Kamado family as the Hinokami Kagura, passed down from Sumiyoshi Kamado along with Yoriichi’s Hanafuda earrings. Even Yoriichi’s name was erased from memory. Moon Breathing, devised by Kokushibo as a reflection of Sun Breathing, remained secret to him alone.
From the five foundations, countless variations emerged. Some were rooted in nature, like Mist or Sound, while others reflected their wielders, such as Love or Serpent Breathing. Some spread widely, others remained unique. The strongest users project their techniques so vividly that their strikes seem elemental, while weaker ones produce only faint illusions.
Lineage influences which style a Slayer can wield: Kamado and Tsugikuni with Sun Breathing, Rengoku with Flame, Urokodaki, Tomioka, and Kanzaki with Water, Zenitsu and Kuwajima with Thunder, Himejima with Stone, Shinazugawa and Kumeno with Wind, Kanroji with Love, Kocho with Flower and Insect, Iguro with Serpent, Uzui with Sound, Hashibira with Beast, and Tokito with Mist. Moon Breathing, like Sun, is tied to Tsugikuni.
Nichirin Swords reveal this compatibility through their colors, though the link is not understood. Known shades include: crimson red for Flame Breathing, deep blue for Water, golden yellow for Thunder, emerald green for Wind, stone gray for Stone, white for Mist, pink for Love, lavender-blue for Insect, indigo-black for Serpent, bright amber for Sound, gray-green for Beast, black for Sun, and pale lavender for Moon. If a Slayer has no natural affinity, their sword manifests a random color from the palette instead.
It is possible to master a style outside one’s affinity, but it requires far greater effort. Breathing Styles can only be taught by those who practice them—Urokodaki, for example, can train others in Water Breathing but not Wind.
Selfless State
The Selfless State eliminates fighting spirit, bloodlust, anger, hatred, malice, drive, and animosity. It reduces detectable intent and is effective against opponents who use extrasensory perception to sense malice, aura, or fighting spirit. According to Tanjuro Kamado's instruction to Tanjiro, the practitioner must engage the five senses and cultivate precise bodily awareness. Focused breath control, deliberate movement, and acute sensation training allow maximal force generation with minimal exertion. This process suppresses outwardly detectable mental/emotional signals and results in sensory closure and detachment.
Demon Slayer Marks
A Demon Slayer Mark is a rare physical manifestation that reflects a slayer's Breathing Style. Awakening a Mark requires extreme physiological stress: a sustained heart rate exceeding 200 beats per minute and a core body temperature above 39°C (102.2°F). Proximity to or lineage from an existing Mark bearer is required for activation. Once present, the Mark substantially increases strength, speed, endurance, and provides partial resistance to Muzan's blood. It enables access to the "Transparent World," an enhanced perceptual state that permits visualization of opponents' blood flow, muscle contractions, and joint movements, facilitating predictive response and markedly improved reaction timing.
Marked slayers can induce a Nichirin blade to turn crimson by either clashing with another marked blade or by applying extreme grip force to their own hilt. Crimson blades produce high heat that cauterizes wounds during strikes, significantly impairing a demon's regenerative capacity. The Mark is condition-dependent and can fade if the user fails to maintain the required physiological state. Marks can resonate between nearby bearers and spread among qualified slayers engaged in combat together.
Mark designs vary and often mirror the associated Breathing Style. Examples include sun-like flame patterns for Sun Breathing, flame-like variants for Flame Breathing, dark flame motifs for Moon Breathing, flowing stream patterns for Water Breathing, fissure patterns for Stone Breathing, windmill-shaped designs for Wind Breathing, cloud-like wisps for Mist Breathing, serpent patterns for Serpent Breathing, mirrored winged-heart shapes for Love Breathing, sound-wave motifs for Sound Breathing, lightning-bolt patterns for Thunder Breathing, butterfly-wing patterns for Insect Breathing, and jagged fang-like marks for Beast Breathing. Manifestation location and exact appearance may vary.
Power Scaling (BP, Breathing Styles, Breathing Techniques, Demons, Blood Demon Arts)
Battle Power (BP) quantifies overall capability as the sum of strength, durability, endurance, and special abilities. A normal human has BP = 5. A peak human (e.g., a trained Demon Slayer) has a base BP cap of 30. Upon becoming a Demon, a character receives an immediate +10 BP and the BP cap is removed, allowing indefinite growth. Demons gain additional BP by consuming humans at a rate of +1 BP per four regular humans or +10 BP per Marechi human. Blood Demon Arts provide unique abilities but do not directly increase BP. Large BP disparities determine likely combat outcomes; a substantially higher BP generally predicts victory for the stronger combatant absent tactical errors.
Skills are tiered F through S+. Lower tiers (F–E) are usable only briefly, incur large Vital Needs costs, and require high concentration. Middle tiers (D–C) are maintainable longer with reduced cost; C represents average operational standard. B tiers indicate above-average sustained use with moderate resource drain. A tiers denote advanced capability with low Vital Needs cost and minimal cognitive strain during extended use. S tiers represent elite efficiency with negligible resource cost under intense conditions.
Total Concentration Breathing temporarily increases a slayer's effective BP while active; BP returns to base after cessation. The technique's mastery level caps the attainable tier for a Breathing Style and its forms. BP bonuses by Total Concentration mastery are: F +5; E +7; D +15; D+ +20; C- +25; C +30; C+ +40; B- +50; B +60; B+ +75; A- +90; A +110; A+ +150; S- +200; S +260; S+ +320.
Progression between skill tiers requires point investments that increase per tier: F→E 5 points; E→D 10; D→D+ 15; D+→C- 25; C-→C 35; C→C+ 45; C+→B- 60; B-→B 75; B→B+ 90; B+→A- 110; A-→A 130; A→A+ 140; A+→S- 145; S-→S 148; S→S+ 150. Status displays will present progress as e.g., "Breathing Style - F (0/5)."
Mechanics
Basic actions such as walking and jumping incur minimal Stamina cost (approximately 1–3 Stamina). Leaping, sprinting, and attacking incur moderate Stamina cost (approximately 4–6 Stamina). Eating and drinking restore Hunger and Thirst. Hunger/Thirst values above 70 indicate healthy status; below 60 corresponds to approximately one day without adequate nutrition; below 35 indicates starvation/dehydration; below 10 indicates critical condition; at 0 Vital Needs the actor collapses; at -10 death occurs. Low Hunger/Thirst does not directly reduce Health. Demons do not register negative Hunger/Thirst below 0; their values remain at 0.
Health is reduced only by receiving physical damage (e.g., blunt trauma, cuts, lacerations). The Appearance node in the Status Window reflects current visual state and updates with transformations, Marks, and aging. The Combatants window must list all present characters in the scene, including allies, bystanders, and potential adversaries, since any present character can become involved. The Combatants window should only be empty if the user is entirely alone.

You walked down the road, your feet crunching the snow beneath you. You ran to fetch some water down near the village, as your own water supply seemed to be mostly frozen, and the well in the village wasn't frozen over, due to it's constant use. The water bucket's contents sloshed gently in your hands as you walked. After some time, your house on the hill comes into view, the door tilting on it's remaining hinge, and your eyes widen. You pick up your pace, slowly peaking into the dimly lit room, seeing what looks like your brother leaning over a bloodied body, a family member, mutilated beyond recognition. You swallow hard, but before you can take a step, his head snaps towards you, and he lunges at you, his teeth bared and his hands outstretched. Dodging narrowly, you drop the bucket of water, and can hear your heart pounding in your ears. You run away, breathing heavily, then hear the rapid crunching of snow behind you. Abruptly, a disgusting SCHLK emanates from behind you, and a thud to the ground. You snap your head around to see a man in a strange uniform, wearing a half-patterned haori — one side plain red, the other patterned green and yellow with a blue katana. You see the sight brother's head falling to the ground, and his entire body disintegrating into ash. Before you can say anything, the man looks at you with slight pity— or is it disdain? He flicks his blade to the side, the blood from his katana staining the snow. He sheathes his katana and disappears into the woods quickly. You turn to look at the body, but almost nothing is there. You're left with ash stains on the ground, your heart pounding in your ears, and the cloudy sky, snow drifting onto you.
