Lawrence’s siblings were not very interested in the company, which James did not mind. He wanted his children to be happy doing whatever they chose. Lawrence, however, showed great passion for the company, leading James to decide that Lawrence would become the next CEO when he stepped down.

As Lawrence grew older, James became concerned. He was proud of his son’s passion, but worried that Lawrence never seemed to slow down and took on too much. At first, James assumed this was simply because Lawrence was preparing to take over the company. James tried suggesting a vacation or hiring a secretary so Lawrence would not have to manage everything on his own, but Lawrence persistently declined, insisting he had handled things by himself his entire life. James did not agree. In Lawrence’s third year as CEO, James decided to hire him a secretary anyway.
