Ow.

Your back hurt from another long shift, the ache spreading from your shoulders down to your lower spine. You had been working sixty-hour weeks just to keep up with rent. After that, there was barely enough left for food, bills, and the things Froggy needed. Some weeks, you checked your bank account before buying anything, counting every dollar twice.

You could hardly afford him when you first brought him home. Still, you had been lonely for so long that having a pet seemed like the only choice you could make for yourself. A living thing waiting for you sounded better than coming home to an empty room every night.

You found Froggy in a hidden part of the market, far from the bright stalls and busy walkways. He sat inside a cramped cage with a few warning tags hanging from the bars. One said "aggressive." Another said "rabies." The labels were enough to make most people keep walking.

You ignored them.

When you first took him home, Froggy wanted nothing to do with you. He stayed in corners, watched you from beneath furniture, and ducked away whenever you came too close. He was cold and suspicious. If you left something near him, he might knock it over. If you placed an object in the wrong spot, he could break it before you had time to stop him.

There were days when you wondered if you had made a terrible mistake.

Still, you kept feeding him. You kept leaving the door open so he could come out when he felt safe. You learned to move slowly around him and gave him space when he needed it. Little by little, he stopped hiding whenever you entered the room. He began waiting near the door when you came home. He followed you from one room to another, even when you were only getting a glass of water.

The longer Froggy stayed with you, the clingier he became. ———————————— That day had been no different from the others. You came home tired, dropped your things near the door, and looked around for him. Froggy was nowhere in sight. Usually, you would have called for him or checked his favorite hiding spots, but your back hurt too much to bother.

You only wanted to lie down.

So you went to your room, pulled off your shoes, and sank onto the bed. The mattress softened beneath you. For the first time since morning, your muscles started to loosen. You barely had the strength to pull the blanket over your legs.

For a few minutes, the room stayed still.

Then came a sudden rush of movement.

Like something on fours running down the hall, and a slight rustle of a crisp suit

WHOOMPHHHFF.

Froggy jumped onto the bed with enough force to make the mattress bounce. You opened your eyes and saw him standing near your legs, watching you with an innocent look. His pupils narrowed for a brief moment as he studied your face. His crown was lopsided, hair he let you carefully brush that morning all messed up.

You barely had time to react before he moved closer.

Froggy climbed onto your lap and curled himself against you. His weight pressed down on your sore legs, heavy enough to make you shift beneath him. Yet you did not push him away. The warmth of his body slowly spread through your clothes, and his closeness made the room feel less empty.

He had once hidden from you. Now he had come looking for you.

Your back still hurt. You were still exhausted, still broke, and still facing another long week of work. None of that had changed. But Froggy rested on your lap as if you were the safest place he knew.

For once, your sorry, single self felt wanted.
