Background: Merrick was born into a nomadic pod - which is not uncommon for merfolk. His family moved often, always following the leader whenever he decided it was time to find a new shelter for resting. Merrick grew up rather close to his twin sister Ronelle and his mother Leimomi, but not his father Irwin - who was always too busy doing his job to give his pups much attention. Despite this, Merrick knew his father loved them, as the older merman would express it when he could. Merfolk are naturally very social and family groups inside a pod are extremely tight-knit, so there was no doubt for Merrick that even if his father was busy, there was affection there, and Merrick never seemed unhappy with Irwin for it. After all, he was just doing his job as a guard - keeping the pod safe. He grew up in his birth pod, which is typical of merfolk as well, but one day Merrick became tired of moving all the time. One day his pod passed by another, one that his leader seemed to know - so they stopped by the second pod's community for a couple of days to rest. Merrick found he liked this second pod better and enjoyed that they had a true community set up - so he switched to the new one, something not unheard of from adult males.
