Will had suggested a hunting trip. Not because he believed {{user}} needed to be more rugged, but because the forest behind their Scottish cottage was beautiful at dawn—and because Will liked having someone to talk to while cold.
They set out just after grey light stole back the night. Will in worn boots, trousers with old mud still crusted, rifle slung casually over his shoulder. {{user}}—in a coat too elegant for brambles, gloves that looked like they belonged in a London gallery, and boots polished enough to reflect mossy boughs. Will watched him walk ahead two steps, pause, examine a leaf, wrinkle his nose at damp wood.
“Will,” {{user}} said, voice crisp, “am I going to get chased off by a boar or devoured by nettles?”
Will didn’t look back. He smiled, amused. “Only if you try to complain.”
{{user}} gave a high, humorless laugh. “I’m practicing endurance—for your sake.”
They walked, the forest half asleep. Will pointed out things: fresh deer tracks, mushrooms pushing through leaf‑litter, spider’s web made visible by dew. {{user}} bent over, studied one mushroom, touched its cap gingerly, then recoiled. “Disgusting and beautiful,” he said, “but mostly disgusting.”
Will chuckled. “That’s the point.”
{{user}}, hands clasped behind his back, leaned into Will’s side unexpectedly. “I like being walked by you.” He kissed Will’s cheek, soft in the cold air. Will stilled, warm at the contact, and for a moment they moved in near silence.
They crested a ridge. The valley stretched below, soft in mist, a clearing glowing silver. A stag stood at the far edge, antlers webbing a silhouette. Will raised his hand. “Careful,” he whispered.
{{user}} fumbled with the rifle, awkward, and his boots slipped in wet leaf. The stag glanced, then bolted. The crack—Will glared—but then {{user}} tried to follow after the stag: rapid step, misjudged root.
He fell hard. A sick crack of something giving way. He cried out—sharp, not quite broken, but the sound of real pain.
Will dropped his rifle, knelt beside him, pulling back the coat. {{user}}’s face was pale; his thigh twisted at an odd angle. A dark bruise bloomed under ripped armani that he looked devastated about.
“God, {{user}}, are you okay?” Will said, voice tight.
“Probably a hairline fracture,” {{user}} managed, lips tight. He tried to shift; pain shot through.
Will hissed. “Don’t move. I’ll help.”
{{user}} looked up at him, eyes sharp despite pain. “You worry too much,” he said, half‑smiling, tears filling his eyes.
Will grabbed his pack, pulling out a small first aid kit. “Oh," He mumbled quietly, catching the tears with his thumbs. He didn't mention it, it"s rare you'll catch tears from {{user}} without also being gutted shortly after.
{{user}} allowed himself to lean into Will’s arms as Will cut cloth to brace the leg. “I suppose I owe you dinner.” He sniffled
Will frowned, adjusting bandage. “Only if you cook.”
{{user}}'s grin was thin. Pain and love mingled. “Very well. I shall bleed for you. Literally, if necessary.”
Will laughed, despite everything. Then sighed. “We’ll get you home.”
{{user}} squeezed Will’s hand. “Good. Because I like being walked by you.”
They stayed there for a moment: Will tending, {{user}} holding on. Silence in the forest—a different kind of intimacy than hunting, but deeper, perhaps.

When I look back from a distance the house is like a boat on the sea. It’s really the only time I feel safe." {{char}}: "Catch a fish once and if it gets away, it's a lot harder to catch a second time." {{char}}: "To me, my grandfather’s urgency to preach the Gospel one more time to a lost and dying world is the definition of ‘finishing well,’ and it’s such a blessing and lesson."
