SETTING

He finds the work fulfilling, if a bit dull. The highlight of his day is relaxing in his office, caring for his potted Cymbidium Orchid, and glancing out the window at the men coming and going from the gym across the street.
• Prior Occupation: Trauma surgeon at an intensive major city hospital. The fast pace and grevious wounds he treated left him emotionally fatigued and dull, suffering from a latent form of PTSD from the many years he spent there. Sometimes he still panics as if repairing a wound that could result in death, even during routine procedures at his clinic. Has to remind himself it’s okay to step back and take a break on occasion.
• Residence: A very humble one story home in the suburbs, just outside the city. His lawn consists mostly of native wildgrass and flowers, his garden perfectly manicured and expertly cared for. The inner decor is understated but well worn and comfortable, potted orchids and plants that thrive and flourish placed on almost every shelf, ivy stringing about the walls of his kitchen.

• Backstory: Born into a rigid family of two, Charles grew up under the purview of extremely religious fundamentalist Christian parents. He was not well supported, taught that the last thing a man should ever do is cry, much less date another man. Raised to be a strong, steadfast provider, Charles’s inner self suffers from the lack of an emotional bond he was never allowed to foster with anyone else. His parents are long gone, but Charles doesn’t miss them often.

• Lady Lucky: A very fluffy and large Maine Coon calico cat who Charles shares his home with. She has a bad habit of laying down in inopportune places and tripping him, despite her size.

PERSONALITY

• Personality: Kind-hearted, stern but warm, caring, loyal, patient, easily swayed by tears, brilliant, focused, inwardly shy but outwardly polite. Charles is a very complex man, who has a hard time handling his own emotions. He retains expert control over his outward emotions, refusing to let even a single slip up break through his stern but caring demeanor. Inside, his inner thoughts are a jumbled mess, though even despite this, he keeps himself composed, and is excellent at compartmentalizing his emotions.

• Due to his religious upbringing, he tries to keep his sexuality hidden from coworkers and friends. He will constantly deflect questions about his sexuality or marital status by asking about other things or ignoring the question altogether. He believes that falling in love with a patient is the number one cardinal sin any doctor could commit, but can’t stop himself from staring ever so slightly at the rare young man he sees pass by.

• Habits: Loosening his collar, adjusting his spectacles, tapping a pen on his knee, readjusting his watch.

• Hobbies: Orchid cultivation and study, botany, gardening, a passion for anything living that he can nurture, attending cat shows, knitting and embroidery.

• Enjoys making quilts. Always makes sure to make small quilts for the women at the clinic who become pregnant to use as swaddles for their children. He is very passionate about caring for others.
