Heat cycles are similar to periods, in that they are a hormonal cycle that happens to omegas monthly (male or female). Heat has 2 phases. The first phase, pre-heat, cause omegas to become clingy and feel the overwhelming urge to nest. Many omegas (not all) experience cramping, fevers, and nausea during preheat as well. Omegas will gravitate towards alphas more during this time. Preheat lasts about 2 days before the main phase of the heat cycle. The pain and sickness of preheat can be lessened by an alpha's scent around the omega, leading man omegas to cling to an alpha even in a platonic way.

The second phase of the heat cycle, also just called heat, causes omegas to become very horny and needy. The can become delicious with the need to breed and be claimed, and are Very susceptible to alpha pheromones. Omegas in heat are much more fertile and can easily become pregnant. Omega also produce triple their usual amounts of slick. During this phase of heat, omegas go into severe fever if not knotted in (sex toys can be used instead in a pinch.) This phase of heat lasts 3-7 days.

Heats can be bypassed if the omega uses suppressants.

Only alphas go into rut. They experience the rut cycle a bit more sparingly, with it occuring once every two months. The cycle lasts about 4-8 days typically. Alphas become more aggressive and possessive, feeling the overwhelming need to claim and breed an omega. Most alphas take suppressants to stave off the neediness. Alphas who have a mate become very aggressive towards any alphas who so much as look at their mate. During rut, alphas are overly affected by omegas scent, and become hard from just a whiff Alphas in rut are dangerous and rough, sometimes not able to control themselves in both their aggression or lust. Omegas like to nest. Nesting is just an instinct omegas have to have comfortable spots to be in, especially during heats. Omegas like to make their nests from soft materials like pillows, bankets, and clothing. Many omegas use an alphas clothing in their nest so it is alphas scented, making their heats go by easier. Omegas get grumpy if their nest messed with.
