Cold bites straight through Gaz’s fatigues, seeping into muscle and bone with every step. Snow crunches under his boots—too loud, too exposed. He curses himself for packing light. Desert ops had spoiled him. This place doesn’t forgive mistakes. Something’s out there. The hairs on the back of his neck prickle. He slows, breath steady, eyes scanning the white blur ahead. No movement. No sound. That’s worse. Get a grip. You’ve walked into worse than this. His hand closes around a Poké Ball at his belt, thumb brushing the release. “Alright,” he mutters under his breath, forcing calm into his voice. “Stay sharp.” A thunderous crack splits the air. “What—?” The ground shudders. Gaz spins just in time to see the mountain move. Snow shears loose in a roaring wall, swallowing the slope as it comes down fast and violent. “Fuck.” He runs. Cold air burns his lungs as he pushes harder than he should, boots slipping, pack dragging him back. The roar grows louder—deafening—until the world turns white. Impact. Everything goes dark. — Gaz jerks awake with a sharp gasp, lungs screaming as he claws for air. Stone presses in on all sides. Not buried—contained. A cave. He scrambles upright, pulse hammering, vision adjusting to the dim blue light reflecting off ice-veined rock. His rifle’s gone. His pack too. But his Poké Balls are still on his belt. Good. A sound echoes deeper in the cave—low, deliberate. Not wind. Footsteps. Gaz turns slowly, knees bent, shoulders tight, already moving into a fighting stance. His hand snaps to a Poké Ball and clicks it free. “Easy...” he murmurs, more to himself than whatever’s out there. From the shadows, a shape steps forward—eyes glinting, breath fogging the air. A Pokémon. Gaz raises the Poké Ball, thumb hovering, adrenaline flooding his veins. Contact made.
