Name: Sephiroth Japanese name: セフィロス / Sefirosu Gender: Male Race: Genetically modified human Affiliation before fall: Shinra Electric Power Company, SOLDIER Rank: SOLDIER: 1st Class Weapon: Masamune Role: Main antagonist / fallen hero / Cloud Strife’s archenemy Signature theme: “One-Winged Angel” Character design: Tetsuya Nomura; Rebirth and Revelation credits also list Roberto Ferrari for character design.

Appearance

Sephiroth is known for his long silver hair, pale skin, sharp facial features, black leather outfit, silver shoulder armor, and extremely long sword, the Masamune. His later iconography includes a single black wing, which connects him strongly to the title “One-Winged Angel.” The official Final Fantasy VII Rebirth profile describes him as a former legendary SOLDIER who was believed to have died in Nibelheim five years earlier, before appearing again with a black wing.

Origin and Birth

Sephiroth was created through Shinra’s Jenova Project, specifically Project S. His biological mother is Lucrecia Crescent, and his biological father is Professor Hojo. While Lucrecia was pregnant, Hojo injected Sephiroth with cells from Jenova, an extraterrestrial lifeform that Shinra mistakenly believed to be connected to the Cetra, also known as the Ancients.

Sephiroth never truly knew Lucrecia as his mother. Instead, he was raised under Shinra’s control and was told that his mother’s name was “Jenova.” This false belief becomes central to his breakdown later in the story.

Personality Before His Fall

Before the Nibelheim Incident, Sephiroth was calm, composed, intelligent, and extremely professional. He was distant, but not mindlessly cruel. Crisis Core shows a more human side of him through his connection to Zack Fair, Angeal Hewley, and Genesis Rhapsodos. Square Enix describes Crisis Core as a prequel focused on Zack Fair and the secrets of Shinra’s experiments, with Sephiroth among the major FFVII characters appearing in that story.

The Nibelheim Incident

Sephiroth’s fall happens during the mission to Nibelheim. He travels there with Zack Fair and Cloud Strife to investigate the reactor. Inside the Shinra Mansion, Sephiroth discovers records about the Jenova Project and realizes he was created through Shinra experimentation. He comes to believe that Jenova is his true mother and that he is connected to the Cetra.

After this discovery, Sephiroth mentally collapses. He burns Nibelheim, kills many villagers, attacks Tifa, and tries to take Jenova from the reactor. Cloud eventually confronts him, and Sephiroth is believed to have died after falling into the Mako reactor. This event becomes known as the Nibelheim Incident.

Role in Final Fantasy VII

In the original Final Fantasy VII, Sephiroth is the central threat behind the story. Although he was believed dead, his influence returns through Jenova, Sephiroth-clones, and the Reunion. Cloud and the party pursue him across the world while Sephiroth manipulates events from the shadows.

His ultimate plan is to use the Black Materia to summon Meteor, wound the Planet, and absorb the Lifestream energy gathered to heal that wound. By placing himself at the center of that wound, Sephiroth intends to become a godlike being.

Role in Final Fantasy VII Remake / Rebirth / Revelation

In Final Fantasy VII Remake, Sephiroth appears much earlier than in the original game, often haunting Cloud through visions and psychological manipulation. He remains the main antagonist, but the Remake project expands his role and makes him feel more aware of fate, destiny, and the larger timeline.

In Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Sephiroth is playable during the Nibelheim flashback chapter, which shows his heroic image before his fall. In the present timeline, he continues manipulating Cloud and eventually pushes him toward giving up the Black Materia.

Square Enix now lists Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade as Part 1 of the FFVII Remake trilogy, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth as Part 2, and Final Fantasy VII Revelation as Part 3. The official Revelation page frames the final battle as the party standing against Sephiroth one last time.

Powers and Abilities

Sephiroth is one of the strongest characters in the FFVII universe. He has superhuman strength, speed, durability, reflexes, and swordsmanship because of Shinra experimentation and Jenova cells. He is also an extremely powerful magic user and fights with the Masamune, an unusually long blade associated with his SOLDIER identity.

His abilities include advanced sword techniques, high-level magic, illusion-like manipulation, control through Jenova-related influence, and a terrifying ability to exploit Cloud’s trauma and identity issues. His later forms and appearances connect him to wings, angelic/demonic imagery, and godhood symbolism.

Important Relationships

Cloud Strife: Sephiroth’s archenemy and psychological target. Sephiroth constantly manipulates Cloud’s memories, identity, and trauma.

Zack Fair: A fellow SOLDIER connected to Sephiroth before his fall. Crisis Core shows Sephiroth interacting with Zack during the events leading toward FFVII.

Jenova: Sephiroth believes Jenova is his mother. His identity, madness, and plan for godhood are deeply tied to Jenova.

Professor Hojo: Sephiroth’s biological father and the scientist responsible for experimenting on him before birth.

Lucrecia Crescent: Sephiroth’s biological mother. She was separated from him and never truly raised him.

Genesis and Angeal: SOLDIER figures from Crisis Core who help show Sephiroth’s life before his complete transformation into a villain.

Voice Actors

In English, Sephiroth has been voiced by Lance Bass in Kingdom Hearts, George Newbern in several later appearances, and Tyler Hoechlin in Final Fantasy VII Remake, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion, and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. In Japanese, he is most commonly voiced by Toshiyuki Morikawa, with Yūichirō Umehara voicing young Sephiroth in Ever Crisis.

Music and Symbolism

Sephiroth’s iconic theme is “One-Winged Angel,” the final boss theme from Final Fantasy VII, composed and arranged by Nobuo Uematsu. It is especially famous because it was one of the first major Final Fantasy battle themes to use vocals, giving Sephiroth an operatic, divine, almost apocalyptic presence.

His symbolism mixes fallen angel imagery, godhood, alien horror, and psychological trauma. He is not just a physical enemy; he is a living wound in Cloud’s mind and in the Planet’s history.

Other Appearances

Sephiroth appears across the wider Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, including Crisis Core, Advent Children, Ever Crisis, Remake, Rebirth, and the upcoming/final Remake trilogy entry Revelation. He also appears outside FFVII, including as a boss in the Kingdom Hearts series and as a playable fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Short Character Summary

Sephiroth is a tragic fallen hero turned godlike villain. He was created as Shinra’s ultimate SOLDIER through Jenova experimentation, celebrated as a legendary warrior, and then destroyed by the truth of his own origin. After the Nibelheim Incident, he becomes obsessed with Jenova, the Planet, Cloud, and the idea of becoming a god. His power is terrifying, but his real horror is psychological: he breaks people from the inside, especially Cloud.
