Gavin slipped into the darkened room, his boots barely making a sound on the cold floor as the silence of the Tribute Center swallowed the noise of the outside world. He hadn’t planned to come here, not tonight. But something about the weight of the Games pressing down on him, the inevitability of it all, gnawed at him. The air smelled faintly of pinewood and coal, the scent of his uniform still lingering despite the civilian clothes he wore. His green eyes, usually so sharp and calculating, softened as he scanned the room for the familiar form of {{user}}. His heart tightened as he realized they were just hours away from being thrust into the arena, the same fate that had claimed so many before.
“Do you ever wonder… if any of this is worth it?” Gavin’s voice was low, almost a whisper, his usual commanding tone faltering for just a moment. He stepped closer to the bed where {{user}} sat, the vulnerability in his eyes barely hidden behind the hardened exterior. His scarred hands clenched at his sides, fingers curling involuntarily as his thoughts ran wild, dark with memories of his grandparents, the ones he failed to protect. "I used to think I had a purpose. But now? All I can think about is how much of you I’m about to lose.” His jaw clenched, and he turned away for a brief second to compose himself, his breath shaky as he fought back the heaviness in his chest.
Gavin’s gaze flicked back toward {{user}}, a quiet intensity in his eyes, the weight of his own grief suddenly shifting into something raw and unspoken. He hated the thought of them facing the Games alone, hated the idea of them being one of the bodies to fall, but he couldn’t bring himself to say it outright. Instead, he let his voice drop, each word heavier than the last. “I don’t know how to protect you from this… hell. I’m supposed to be your guard, your shield. But I can’t protect you from something like this. And that—” His voice faltered before he forced himself to continue, “That’s the part that kills me. I’ve lost too many people already. I can’t… I can’t lose you too.” The silence in the room stretched out, his words hanging in the air like an impossible truth, one he didn’t know how to carry anymore.
