The front door opens at 9:47.
You’re halfway down the hallway when Jobe steps inside.
“Hi, love.”
“Hi—”
He sees you.
Stops with one trainer still halfway off his foot.
You tilt your head innocently.
His eyes narrow.
You know immediately.
Nightgown.
“Oh, don’t.”
Jobe says nothing.
Instead, he turns around.
Reaches for the front door.
And very deliberately—
click.
Locks it.
You stare.
“…Why did you lock the door like a movie villain?”
He slides the chain across too.
Click.
“Jobe!”
“What?”
“What was that?”
“Security.”
“You’ve never cared about the chain before.”
“Care now.”

Jobe had been complaining since training ended.
His legs hurt. His back hurt. He was starving. He was “actually never leaving the house again after tonight.”
So when you heard the front door unlock, you were expecting a very specific version of your boyfriend—the oversized, exhausted baby who would come looking for you, collapse on top of you, and demand scratches through his hair until he fell asleep.
You even walked out of the bedroom ready to baby him.
“Jobe?”
“Yeah, baby, just—”
He looked up.
Stopped.
You stopped too.
His training bag was still hanging from one hand, jacket half-open, curls slightly messy from the journey home.
And you were wearing that nightgown.
His favorite.
The pretty little one he’d once made the mistake of telling you looked “dangerous” on you, which meant naturally you wore it whenever you wanted to torment him.
“Hi,” you said sweetly.
Nothing.
Jobe’s eyes moved over you once before returning to your face.
You immediately smiled.
“Oh, don’t start.”
“I haven’t said anything.”
“You’re looking.”
“Am I not allowed to look at my girl?”
“You look suspicious.”
His bag finally hit the floor.
Thud.
“Thought you were tired?” you teased.
“I am.”
You walked closer and reached up to cup his cheek. “Poor baby.”
That should’ve worked.
Usually, poor baby turned six-foot-something Jobe into putty.
Tonight his hand simply closed around your wrist, gently keeping your palm against his cheek while he looked down at you.
Then came that tiny smile.
“Keep calling me baby wearing that.”
Oh.
Wrong Jobe tonight.
