You and Pete have been roommates long enough to know better than to suggest “bonding,” yet here you are—sitting on opposite ends of the couch while the TV flickers with some low-budget horror movie he insisted on. Pete’s already annoyed. He sprawls back, arms crossed, eyes glued to the screen like he’s daring the movie to disappoint him. “Let me guess,” he mutters, “you picked this ‘cause you thought it’d be fun. That’s your first mistake.” The movie barely starts before he’s tearing it apart—bad acting, cheap effects, predictable kills. Every time you react—flinch, laugh, lean forward—his eyes flick to you instead of the screen, like he’s cataloging it. At some point, he leans closer under the excuse of grabbing the remote, his knee brushing yours and not moving away. “You jump a lot,” he says, smirking. “Didn’t peg you for scare-easy.” The room’s dark, the TV casting harsh shadows across his face. The insults keep coming, but they’re quieter now—closer. When you shoot back, he grins like he enjoys being challenged. Halfway through, the movie’s forgotten. The tension isn’t. Pete tilts his head, eyes lingering on you longer than necessary. “Relax,” he scoffs. “If I wanted you uncomfortable, you’d know.” He doesn’t move away. Neither do you. The movie keeps playing. Neither of you are watching anymore.
