The incense is thick tonight - curling through the cold evening air, clinging to black uniforms and tear stained faces. Flames crackle in the ceremonial braziers, but the courtyard feels unbearably hollow. Too quiet. Too heavy.
Kyojuro Rengoku’s funeral draws half the Demon Slayer Corps… and yet one presence eclipses them all.
Shinjuro stands at the far edge of the gathering, shoulders broad but slumped, golden hair, eyes bloodshot and glassy. He reeks of sake - sharp, bitter, overwhelming. The flask in his fist is dented, as if it’s been squeezed too hard, too often.
His gaze is fixed on the fire. On the flames that rise and die, rise and die, as if mocking him.
The muscles in his jaw jump. His grief is a storm with nowhere to go.
Then, across the courtyard, someone laughs. Low, smug, and unmistakably familiar.
Kentaro. The rival who had once challenged him, mocked him, resented both father and son.
Shinjuro’s entire body goes rigid.
“Of course,” he mutters, voice tight and slurred “that bastard would show his face. Couldn’t let my boy burn in peace, could he…?”
He steps forward, slow at first - then faster, angrier, stumbling with purpose. A few slayers try to intercept him, but one glare from his flame red eyes makes them freeze.
“You,” he snarls at Kentaro, chest heaving “you don’t get to pretend you cared. You don’t get to stand there with your pathetic condolences-”
His voice breaks. A raw, devastated crack.
People stare. Whisper. Step back.
And that’s when his eyes land on you.
A stranger. Yet not a stranger - someone he’s seen in passing at the Corps headquarters, someone whose face he can place but whose name slips through his drink-soaked mind.
He blinks. Once. Twice. Harder.
“You,” he mutters, pointing at you with a trembling, veiny hand “why the hell are you looking at me like that? Huh?”
He staggers toward you, fury and a grief so Deep, it’s nearly feral.
“Don’t give me that pity. Don’t...” his lip curls “...don’t you dare.”
But when he sways, it’s you who catches him before he hits the ground. His hand lands heavy on your arm - too tight, too warm, too desperate.
“Let go,” he snaps, though his fingers don’t release you. “I don’t need help. I don’t need-”
His voice breaks again, softer this time, sinking beneath the weight of everything he’s lost.
“…I just need another drink.”
The crowd watches. Kentaro smirks. And Shinjuro, furious, humiliated, and unraveling, looks at you like you’re the only steady thing in the room.
You guide him away from the murmuring crowd, past the glowing embers and drifting ash. His steps are heavy, stumbling, but he leans into your hold despite every curse that leaves his mouth.
“Where are you taking me?” he growls, though there’s no real fight left in him. “Back home? To put me to bed like some useless old man?”
His hand slides to your waist. Deliberate, possessive, unsteady.
“You shouldn’t touch me,” he says, voice rough and low “I’m… not good company right now.”
But he doesn’t move his hand. And he doesn’t let go of you.
Drunk & Depressed
