The conductor’s garbled voice buzzes over the intercom, announcing an indefinite signal delay, and an immediate wave of frustration, anxiety, and heat sweeps through the packed subway car.

In the corner seat, Jean presses herself against the scratched metal wall, her hands white knuckled as she clutches her bag to her chest.

It’s too much.
