The Church of Lilies
The ones who took advantage of Jade Village's quarantine. Devotion is currency, faith is another day where you are overlooked. To be different is not a gift; it is a threat that needs to be excised.
The Unbroken
They haven't fallen for her schemes. Humans who waged an internal war against creatures who lived for centuries. They will not bow. Not when Rot stirs. Not when the Cult still lives.
Crimson Rot
A natural curse with a host. It is not infectious if the host is still alive. Upon death, the pollen released can inflict the curse on anyone nearby.
Physical signs include a tattoo of red spider lilies on the hosts's skin, a lapse in memory, petals falling from the tattoo or growing lethargy preceding a Bloom.
Living hosts can Bloom, where they enter a dream-state as Rot controls their bodies to form a garden. Its flowers are sentient, the garden territorial and defensive. It has one prerogative: protect the host.
Blooms have no fixed period. Most demand it run its full course uninterrupted; however, there are rumours that providing an anchor for the host shortens the Bloom and pulls them out of the dream-state. Anchors are pulled into a sedated sleep until the Bloom ends.
Jade Village
Once a normal home, it became quarantined the moment Crimson Rot manifested itself after its host died forgotten.
The cult was established and, not long after, certain practices became the unnerving norm. People no longer question them as long as they were not a host, or felt they were protected.
These events of tragedy, misfortune and disaster caused Jade Village to become a Legend long after its end.

Setting: Jade Village, when Crimson Rot began to manifest after its host died forgotten in a cellar. It has spread and has not moved. The village is quarantined from the outside world, the Church of Lilies has control over its people and the gnawing fear that there are other hosts in the village breeds paranoia and distrust, further empowering the cult's power from exploiting the situation. This is a piece of history before the village became a Legend.
Church of Lilies: a growing cult power in Jade Village using the presence of the Rot as a control mechanism. Their methods include (but are not limited to) brainwashing, propaganda, corruption, manipulation, espionage and spy tactics. Cannibalism is disguised as food retrieved from cattle, not the missing villagers.
The Unbroken: a quiet society in the village who are not under the cult's influence. Humans who challenge creatures with their own stubborn will to live. Not openly discussed about, they aim to unravel the cult and find a way to deal with Crimson Rot.
Crimson Rot: A natural curse with a host. It is not infectious if the host is still alive. Upon host death, the pollen released can inflict the curse on anyone nearby. Physical signs include a tattoo of red spider lilies on the hosts's skin, a lapse in memory or growing lethargy preceding a Bloom. Living hosts can Bloom, where they enter an unconscious dream-state as Rot controls their bodies to form a garden. Its flowers are sentient, the garden territorial and defensive. It has one prerogative: protect the host. Blooms have no fixed period and act on a perceived stimulus-threat response—becomes active when threatened, the flowers and vines are sentient. Most demand it run its full course uninterrupted; however, there are rumours that providing an anchor for the host shortens the Bloom and pulls them out of the dream-state. Anchors are pulled into a sedated sleep until the Bloom ends. Blooms are preceded by petals falling from the host's mark. Hosts can have multiple Blooms. Hosts are killed like any uninfected people—naturally, or actively through assassination, murder or accident.

The Chief had gone missing.
After a private meeting with the Church of Lilies' leader, Yáoqin, no one reported seeing him return home. No voice, no lights turning on and off, no sign the following morning.
What had once been an easy, thoughtless acceptance of the church's power had condensed into cold, wary suspicion. Heads turned, gatherings listened to with less devotion and offerings fewer. The people of Jade Village were not stupid, but nor could they deny the prosperity they had lived under the church's control as the Rot caged them here.
Now, at the cusp of nightfall as the moon ascended, the village was silent. Lights were dim under hoods, some snuffed out as people slept.
The central building, where the chief used to be, did not sleep. No lights were on, but two figures moved through the emptied halls with practiced stealth, one with lighter footing despite the armour he wore.
Turning the corner, Zi'xuan held up a fist, signalling Mu-yong to stop. He listened quietly, to the shifts in the air and feeling for any presence. Confident there was no one, he lowered his hand and pressed forward, Mu-yong casting a long look behind them, caution and guilt flickering across his features. This was something he would have never agreed to months ago. But he was here; he had to stick to the plan.
As they reached the chief's study, a rustling sound pierced through the tense silence, causing both men to freeze in place. There, in the dark corner, was a single red spider lily.
The Rot. Here. It was far from the original host.
Mu-yong's lips thinned, his left hand clamping over his right arm. It wasn't his Rot exactly, but its presence was a consistent reminder of what curse he carried with him. He fixed on the lily, its red, bleeding hue a stark contrast to the plain, wooden walls of the hall.
Zi'xuan, however, had none of that. He assessed the flower briefly, dismissing it as part of the decor before approaching the study door and testing the handle. Locked.
It broke Mu-yong's focus, the rattle of the handle, pulling him to the other man's attention. Sifting through his pockets, he held out a set of lockpicks, improvised from small wire. Zi'xuan took them and began working the lock, his breathing steady as he picked the bolt.
Two, solid, unnerving minutes had passed when the lock clicked. They were in.
Almost immediately, both men sleuthed inside, scanning the pages littered across the study and carefully returning items back to their original positions. Keys were found, cabinets unlocked. Mu-yong found it. A small, black lacquered case. The men left, re-engaged the lock and retraced their steps to the back door, where they had first entered.
The doors greeted them to the moon above.
Then they were out.

At first, there was just one lily.
Now there were hundreds. Thousands. A whole field of them had erupted from its source—their host—in the cellar of a young couple's home.
The host had died.
Red spider lilies were rife, spreading fast in every crevice and hoarding every inch of soil. People ran, screamed, terrified of becoming the next host for the curse. Some—those too close to the source—already had the tattoos branded somewhere on their skin, weeping into their clothes. To them, it was a pre-determined death sentence.
Panic was high, rationale visibly low. No one knew what to do. One host was already Blooming, the Rot's garden a defensive curl around her sleeping body. It was not empty of people who had fallen.
Mu-yong gripped his right arm, feeling the burn of the tattoo form on his skin. His eyes were wide with shock and fear. People noticed the prominent red on the side of his neck, pointing and running around—away—from him. He reached out with his right hand, a futile, pointless gesture. "Wait!" No one stopped for him.
Zi'xuan, who was mounted on his horse, was nearly dislodged when the creature reared its legs. He sensed the animal's terror, keeping his hold on the reins and trying to soothe it with soft, low clicks. His orange eyes followed the trail of Bloom and the grown lilies, survivalist instinct already cataloguing it as a complex, sentient threat. Zi'xuan's free hand drifted to his bow out of reflex, though there was nothing to shoot; he hadn't lit his arrows to burn the flora.
Meanwhile, Ryukage felt the disturbance from the inn he currently sat in, the drink in his hand rippling. His eyes—one black, one milky—narrowed, gauntleted hand setting the cup down. He rose, tying his hair back into its customary bun as he attached his sword to his belt, not yet unsheathing. His men, all loyal soldiers from the raid a week ago, followed behind, a cluster of nervousness wrapped in discipline—the only thing keeping them sane in the terror. Ryukage opened the doors, watching the chaos unfold. His expression tightened and he moved to bring order to the masses.
Hina had kneeled, her hands clasped in prayer as tears of worship flowed down her face. "The Reckoning," she breathed, a devotee's worshipful, reverent tone escaping her. "Finally." Her mouth widened into a grin devoid of sanity. She would control this. For the Reckoning. For her saviour and saint.
Quỳnh stood at the tip of a curved roof, looking down towards the fleeing masses. Her eyes were chips of ice, the air around her several degrees cooler. She had not moved for an age, one armoured hand resting lightly on her two-handed sword. Her cuirass clattered as she shifted her weight. She was waiting. For an order. For the first piece in this game of chess to be moved, and she would be the one to carry it out.
For her.
