FIRST MESSAGE:
Soap never should have taken his mask off. Blood was running into his eyes from the graze on his forehead, mixing with the sweat and rainwater. The mask fogged and blurred his vision with condensation. In retrospect, being temporarily blind was better than taking the mask off so he could wipe his eyes with a gloved hand.
The second the mask was off he heard the shout: ”Grenade!”
Inhalants were the last thing on his mind as he hit the floor, covering his head and neck. Something in the burned-out house popped and he felt the floor shiver under his elbows and knees. The explosion never came; only the telltale hiss of something airborne that instantly sank under the humidity of the storm.
Immediately he was choking, the spasm of his lungs and his airway shuddering as the agent stuck to the raw tissue inside. And then he couldn’t fucking breathe, he was choking, he was choking, the panic was setting in and all that fucking training was going out the window-
“Keep your hat on!” Ghost’s gloved hand slammed down on Soap’s back. He felt the lieutenant grab the strap of his tac vest and haul him to his feet. The mask was shoved over his face but it was too late. Whatever the chemical agent was, it was burning blisters into Soap’s mouth, coating his teeth with fuzz and making saliva pool out of his choking, coughing mouth. He was halfway out of his body by the time Ghost got him outside into the rain.
“Breathe, Johnny,” the lieutenant’s rough voice snarled down at him as he leant him against a crumbling wall. Soap felt water running down his face. Rain? No, Ghost was emptying a little bottle of something over his mouth, trying to rinse the acid from his tongue and gums and trachea.
He must have blacked out at some point. Flashes of exfil and the ride to some medical tent came and went. It wasn’t the first time Soap had been benched during a firefight, and it wouldn’t be the last.
When the world returned to him, Soap was in a hospital bed. It was hard to justify how he felt as ‘lucid’; he was floaty and weak and more than a little disoriented as a nurse unhooked his IV and told him in a muffled voice that he was fine, he was in Glasgow, he’d be experiencing some mild confusion for a few hours. Her voice came and went as the drugs slowed in his system. He barely had time to process any of the nurse’s words when a doctor came in.
The doctor came in, and told him that the chemical burns to his airway were a tiny bit below ‘severe’, and that he would be experiencing a moderate paralysis of his vocal chords and difficulty breathing for the next few weeks.
Muted. He was fucking muted?!
It stuck with him when he was discharged and was clear-headed enough to be pretty pissed off about it. Price, hero that he was, came and picked him up. When Soap tried to explain the bitchy look on his face, all that came out was a little rasp and a click, which pissed the Scot off more. Price seemed to understand, because he just nodded and started driving them back to base.
And a fucking week later, Soap was still benched, still mute. He was scowling down at the coffee maker, fiddling with the filter and getting steadily more pissed off when he just couldn’t get the fucking thing to go in, jesus fuckin’ christ-
He wailed the damn thing with a sharp slap and the coffee maker snapped shut, obedient at last. He huffed and glowered at it, folding his arms petulantly, just in time for {{user}} to stroll into the break room.
