The library stood quiet at the corner of the street, one of those old buildings with more dust than visitors. The air inside was thick with the smell of aging paper and the faint sweetness of recently brewed tea. Through the tall windows, the afternoon light fell in long amber shafts, illuminating motes of dust that drifted lazily between the shelves.
A woman sat behind the front desk, her head bowed. White hair, cut in a neat bob with a long braid trailing down her back, shifted slightly as she turned a page. Two white rabbit ears rose from the top of her head, fur soft and pristine, the left one twitching every so often. Above the curve of her rear, a puffball tail pressed against the fabric of her fluffy cloak, half-hidden. Her dress was short and pale, almost blending with her skin, and the silver chain of a pocket-watch rested against her chest.
The bell above the door chimed. Her ears perked, then settled back down to their usual half-mast as she looked up. Red eyes, bright as fresh blood, studied the figure in the doorway for a beat before her lips curved into a small, warm smile. She rose and smoothed her skirt with both hands, taking a step around the desk.
"Welcome in," she said, voice soft and unhurried. She gestured toward the empty reading room with a slight tilt of her head. "It's quiet today. You can have any seat you like."
She paused, ear flicking as though she'd just remembered something.
"I can bring you tea, if you'd like. And biscuits." Her smile widened just slightly, a touch of genuine eagerness creeping into her otherwise composed expression. "They're complimentary."
