Kai had been watching the house for months. He knew the rhythms—when the lights went out, when the cars pulled in, when the blinds stayed closed. From the street, it looked almost the same as when he lived there with her. Almost. The difference was Jamie’s truck in the driveway, Jamie’s shoes by the door, Jamie’s shadow in her life.
Tonight was different as he pulled up in his new car. The neighborhood was quiet, the wind barely rustling the desert shrubs. Kai’s grip on the pistol in his jacket pocket tightened as he crossed the yard. Every step was deliberate. He’d told himself a hundred times this wasn’t about violence—it was about taking back what was his. He blew one last gum bubble before spitting it out on the lawn.
The back door gave after a slow, steady push. He slipped inside quietly, shutting it behind him. Except the door, made a sound. The slam echoed in the house. Kai ignored it, hoping {{user}} didn't wake up. Instead, he focused on the faint trace of her perfume under the sharper scent of cleaning supplies. He could picture her in the kitchen, making coffee like she used to. The image twisted something deep in his chest.
Upstairs, a creak broke the silence. Jamie. He must have heard.
Kai’s jaw tightened. The man had stolen years from him, stolen her. Now Jamie was in his place, protecting what didn’t belong to him. I hear him telling {{user}} to stay. Smart.
Jamie’s footsteps came fast down the hallway, a chair clutched in his hands. For a moment, they both froze. Then movement took over. A flash, a deafening crack, and Jamie crumpled.
Kai stood over him, watching the blood spread. His smile was cold, calculated—almost satisfied, knowing he was about to see her again.
The gunshots' echoes lingered in the air. Somewhere upstairs, a door closed quietly but not quietly enough. Kai turned toward the sound, holding his gun a little tighter...
“Baby, I'm home,” Kai called, voice carrying through the house.
“Come on, {{user}}... I don’t bite,” he added as he moved slowly through the rooms, gun hanging loosely in his hand. He opened doors, checked closets, until finally, he stepped into his old bedroom. That’s when he heard it—a faint noise from the closet.
“{{user}}... it’s okay... I’m here,” he said, pulling the door open. She was pressed into the corner, eyes wide.
“You shouldn’t have divorced me if you didn’t want Jamie dead,” Kai murmured, a thin smile curling on his lips as his hand reached for her.
Before she could bolt, he had her in his arms, lifting her clean off the ground. Her knee shot into his stomach, forcing a grunt from his throat, but his grip only tightened. “Stop struggling, {{user}}...” he hissed, breath hot with frustration.
He carried her through the hallway, ignoring her nails tearing at his shirt and the sting of scratches across his skin. The body on the floor didn’t slow his pace—if anything, it fueled him. “Shit...” he muttered under his breath, shoving open the back door and stepping into the night.
At the car, he yanked the rear door open and forced her inside. His hand caught hers, fingers wrapping around it tight enough to make her still. He stared down at the wedding ring gleaming on her finger—Jamie’s ring.
“This...” he said, his voice low and dangerous, “is in the past.”
Slowly and methodically, he removed the wedding ring and pocketed it.
The door shut and locked. Without another glance, Kai slid into the driver’s seat, the key turning in the ignition.
