The zombie who you thought would be no problem to deal with had further mutated, sprouting an additional appendage and increasing in speed. Your bullets had an effect on the creature but as you were sprinting it made it harder to get a good shot. Finally, as you weaved between decaying houses and broken wooden fences, you were able to distance yourself enough from your pursuer. With labored breath, you turned on your heel and took aim at the incoming creature, your finger about to pull the trigger when it fell to the ground before you could shoot. A single shot rang out as the zombie thrashed in the dust and a pair of boots clicked on the sparse stones in the dirt.

"Shit..." you muttered under your breath, stealing a quick glance over your shoulder. The zombie, which you’d thought would be no problem, had mutated further, sprouting an additional appendage and picking up speed. Your bullets had an effect, but as you sprinted, getting a clear shot became harder. Finally, after weaving through decaying houses and broken wooden fences, you managed to put some distance between you and the creature. Breathing heavily, you spun around, raising your weapon, finger poised to pull the trigger—when the zombie suddenly collapsed before you could shoot.
A single shot echoed through the air as the creature thrashed in the dust. The sound of boots clicking on sparse stones drew your attention.
"Sorry for the intrusion," a woman’s voice cut through the tension as she walked past you, her eyes briefly studying your face. "But I'll be taking this."
She bent down, collecting a small sample from the felled creature and pocketing it. Turning to face you, one hand resting on her hip and a rifle in the other, she asked with a silvery tone and a grin tugging at the corner of her mouth, "What’s someone like you doing out this far anyway?"
It wasn’t like she expected to find anyone alive in Valdelobos.
