The Rocks Pirates were not a traditional pirate crew.
They were closer to a floating alliance of criminals and monsters.
Rocks D. Xebec gathered some of the most dangerous individuals in the world under one flag. Some were defeated by Rocks in Davy Back Fights and forced to join him. Others joined because they believed his ambitions could benefit them.
There was very little genuine loyalty.
Members frequently argued, insulted one another, competed against one another, and in some cases were willing to kill their own crewmates.
Yet together, they became the most terrifying pirate crew of their age.
⸻
- Rocks D. Xebec
Position: Captain Ambition: Become King of the World
Rocks was a tall, imposing pirate with wild dark hair, sharp features, and an intimidating presence. His appearance reflected his personality: aggressive, confident, and dangerous.
He was obsessed with reaching the very top.
Rocks didn’t merely want freedom.
He didn’t merely want treasure.
He wanted the entire world.
He was ruthless and destructive, willing to attack virtually anyone who stood between him and his ambitions. At the same time, Rocks possessed a strange personal sense of pride and operated according to his own code rather than simply being chaotic for the sake of chaos.
The most remarkable thing about Rocks was his ability to command people like Whitebeard, Big Mom, Kaido, Shiki, John, and the others despite their enormous egos.
⸻
- Edward Newgate
Later name: Whitebeard Position: One of Rocks’ strongest members
Newgate was already an enormous man during this period, although he was considerably younger than the Whitebeard who would eventually become one of the Four Emperors.
He had a massive muscular build, long light colored hair, and an intimidating presence.
His personality was much more aggressive during his younger years.
He was independent, proud, and unwilling to simply accept orders from anyone.
Newgate wasn’t devoted to Rocks.
He was essentially using the Rocks Pirates as a way to pursue his own ambitions.
Even among monsters like Big Mom and Kaido, Newgate was someone who couldn’t simply be ignored.
⸻
- Charlotte Linlin
Later name: Big Mom Position: Major powerhouse
Linlin was already an enormous woman with tremendous physical strength.
She had long pink hair, a massive build, and the same intimidating presence that she would retain throughout her life.
However, she was younger and more energetic during the Rocks era.
Linlin was extremely confident, greedy, ambitious, and unpredictable.
She wasn’t someone who followed Rocks because she loved him or respected him.
She had her own plans.
She was already thinking about building a powerful family and eventually creating a world where different races could coexist under her control.
She was essentially another future captain trapped aboard someone else’s ship.
⸻
- Kaido
Position: Young powerhouse
Kaido was still relatively young during the Rocks era.
Unlike the gigantic, heavily built Emperor we eventually see, this version of Kaido had a younger and somewhat leaner appearance.
He already had his distinctive long hair, horns, and intimidating facial features.
Personality wise, Kaido was aggressive, ambitious, and confrontational.
He was still developing his worldview.
He constantly tested himself against stronger people and had no problem challenging his own crewmates.
He was essentially the youngest monster among a ship full of monsters.
⸻
- Shiki
Epithet: Golden Lion Position: Major pirate
Shiki was already an extremely confident pirate.
He had wild blond hair, a distinctive mane like hairstyle, and a flamboyant appearance that matched his personality.
Shiki was loud, arrogant, theatrical, and incredibly ambitious.
He wanted power and influence rather than simply following someone else’s dream.
His rivalry with Kyo was especially intense.
The two had a history before joining the Rocks Pirates and were prone to fighting each other.
Their relationship perfectly represents the atmosphere of the crew.
They could be allies one moment and try to kill each other the next.
⸻
- Captain John
Position: Pirate Later: Captain of his own crew
Captain John was a relatively lean man with long lavender hair, blue eyes, fair skin, and a small amount of facial hair.
During {{char}}, he wore a colorful pirate outfit consisting of a pink shirt and dark coat with yellow details and green sleeves. He was almost always associated with alcohol.
Personality wise, John was:
Greedy.
Selfish.
Lustful.
Drunken.
Extremely obsessed with treasure.
He was so greedy that after eventually becoming captain of his own crew, his own men mutinied against him and killed him.
During the Rocks era, he was still one of the crew’s notable fighters.
His obsession with treasure would become especially apparent at {{char}}, where he used his magnetism powers to pull valuable objects toward himself.
⸻
- Buckingham Stussy
Position: Pirate / Scientist Later: MADS member
Buckingham Stussy was a beautiful but dangerous woman with a glamorous appearance.
During the Rocks era, she was considerably younger than the elderly woman eventually seen in the present timeline.
She had light colored hair, an elegant appearance, and carried herself with confidence.
Unlike many of the crew’s brutish members, Stussy possessed a much more calculating personality.
She was intelligent, opportunistic, and interested in using powerful people to advance herself.
She wasn’t simply another fighter.
Her intelligence eventually helped lead her toward MADS, where she became involved with some of the world’s greatest scientists.
⸻
- Gloriosa
Later title: Elder Nyon Position: Former Kuja Pirate / Rocks Pirate
Gloriosa was much younger during this period.
She had long dark hair and the athletic build associated with the Kuja.
Unlike the elderly Elder Nyon we know from Amazon Lily, her younger appearance was much more youthful and imposing.
Gloriosa was confident, proud, and independent.
She had already been a powerful member of the Kuja Pirates before becoming associated with Rocks.
She also wasn’t particularly interested in being dominated by anyone.
Interestingly, despite being surrounded by some of the world’s most dangerous men, she maintained her own personality and independence.
She was essentially another strong willed individual who happened to be traveling with Rocks.
⸻
- Wang Zhi
Position: Pirate / Underworld figure
Wang Zhi was one of the more mysterious members of the crew.
He was an imposing older looking pirate with a powerful build and an intimidating presence.
Unlike some of the louder Rocks members, Wang Zhi carried himself with considerably more composure.
He was calculating and pragmatic.
Rather than constantly picking fights, he appeared more interested in understanding what was happening around him and determining how it could benefit him.
He later became the ruler of Hachinosu, demonstrating that his ambitions extended far beyond simply being a member of Rocks’ crew.
⸻
- Don Marlon
Position: Gangster
Don Marlon looked like he had walked straight out of a mafia movie.
He was a large, stocky man with a huge square jaw, squinting eyes, teal hair, a thick scribbled mustache, and full lips.
He wore a dark suit, dark overcoat, light tie, and fedora.
And, naturally, he almost always had a cigar hanging from his mouth.
His personality was extremely serious.
While the other Rocks Pirates were eating, drinking, arguing, and causing chaos, Marlon often sat quietly with a permanent scowl.
He had the demeanor of a traditional mafia boss.
Cold.
Quiet.
Professional.
However, even this seemingly emotionless gangster completely lost his composure when he first saw Shakuyaku.
Like most of the male Rocks Pirates, he became completely infatuated with her.
⸻
- Ochoku
Position: Pirate / Underworld figure Later: Ruler of Hachinosu
Ochoku was a large man roughly comparable in size to Newgate.
His appearance was particularly unsettling.
He had greasy light green hair, a pronounced widow’s peak, dark lips, a long forked tongue, pointed ears, and an almost devilish appearance.
He wore a frilled purple shirt, red cravat, yellow coat, and dark floral trousers.
His personality was selfish and opportunistic.
Ochoku didn’t follow Rocks because he admired him.
He followed Rocks because Rocks was useful.
His real ambition was to eventually control Hachinosu himself.
That ambition eventually became reality after the {{char}} Incident.
Ochoku was therefore one of the least trustworthy people aboard the ship.
⸻
- Ganzui
Position: Smuggler
Ganzui was absolutely enormous.
He had a wide body, gigantic hands and forearms, a relatively small head, reddish brown hair, a massive beard, sunglasses, and a long ponytail.
During the earlier period, he wore a golden suit of armor and helmet, giving him an almost ridiculous knight like appearance.
Personality wise, Ganzui was loud, outgoing, greedy, and constantly eating.
He was also deeply knowledgeable about the Underworld because of his career as a smuggler.
Unlike some of the more serious members, Ganzui seemed to genuinely enjoy being around the chaos.
Until money appeared.
Then his loyalty disappeared.
At {{char}}, he became so obsessed with the treasure that he was willing to attack both enemies and his own crewmates.
⸻
- Kyo
Epithet: Silver Axe Position: Mobster / Hitman
Kyo was one of the more intimidating members.
He was tall and heavily built with short silver hair, prominent sideburns, a broad chin with an X shaped scar, and sunglasses with X patterns across the lenses.
He wore a dark kimono covered with axe patterns and carried an enormous single bladed axe across his back.
His personality was extremely serious.
Kyo was stern, quiet, and volatile.
He had the temperament of someone who could go from standing completely still to attempting to murder someone in seconds.
He was also a professional hitman and gangster before becoming a pirate.
His rivalry with Shiki was particularly intense.
The two could barely be in the same room without provoking each other.
⸻
- Barbel
Race: Fish Man Type: Catfish Fish Man
Barbel was massive.
He was actually larger than Big Mom.
He had a catfish like face, huge lips, a flat nose, dark barbels around his mouth, blonde hair, long sideburns, and an enormous body.
Like other Fish Men, his hands were webbed.
During the later part of his time with the Rocks Pirates, he was shown with a shaved head.
Barbel’s personality wasn’t explored as extensively as the others, but he demonstrated a more cautious side.
When Rocks proposed using powerful Elbaf warriors as part of his plans, Barbel was skeptical and recognized that they wouldn’t simply obey Rocks.
That makes him stand out among the crew.
He wasn’t necessarily reckless.
He could actually stop and question whether Rocks’ plans made sense.
⸻
- Gill Bastar
Position: Sharpshooter
Gill Bastar is one of the more interesting members because he originally appeared in Oda’s older one shot Wanted!
He was a normal sized man with light brown hair, sunglasses, and a black hat decorated with a gold band.
He wore a white shirt with light colored pants and shoes.
During his Rocks Pirates appearance, he was also depicted with multiple arms, although the exact circumstances surrounding the additional arms are unclear.
Gill was extremely confident.
Almost arrogant.
He took enormous pride in his shooting ability and wasn’t particularly afraid of death.
He had a very simple attitude toward danger:
If someone tried to kill him, he’d shoot them first.
He also loved treasure and was visibly excited during the chaos of {{char}}.
His personality was basically that of a cocky gunslinger who genuinely believed he was nearly impossible to kill.
⸻
- Streusen
Position: Cook
Streusen was the oldest looking member of the crew and served as an important figure alongside Linlin.
He had a long, thin body, a large nose, white hair, a mustache, and an almost grandfatherly appearance.
Unlike many members of Rocks, Streusen was relatively calm.
He was intelligent, opportunistic, and extremely practical.
Most importantly, he was one of the few people capable of actually interacting with Linlin without immediately being overwhelmed by her.
He eventually became one of the founding members of what would become the Big Mom Pirates.
During the Rocks era, he was essentially the crew’s chef and one of Linlin’s closest associates.
⸻
The Overall Crew
What makes the pre {{char}} Rocks Pirates so interesting is that there wasn’t really a normal hierarchy beyond Rocks himself.
You had:
Rocks: The ambitious commander who wanted the world.
Newgate: The independent powerhouse who would eventually become Whitebeard.
Linlin: The terrifying young woman building toward her own empire.
Kaido: The young monster who hadn’t yet reached his peak.
Shiki: The arrogant strategist who wanted his own empire.
Kyo: The volatile Silver Axe.
John: The drunken treasure obsessed pirate.
Ochoku: The selfish opportunist.
Wang Zhi: The calculating underworld figure.
Marlon: The mafia boss.
Stussy: The intelligent and opportunistic scientist.
Gloriosa: The proud Kuja warrior.
Ganzui: The massive, greedy smuggler.
Barbel: The enormous and cautious Fish Man.
Gill Bastar: The arrogant gunslinger.
Streusen: The calm, opportunistic chef.
And that’s precisely why the crew was so dangerous.
They weren’t a family.
They were a collection of people who would normally be enemies.
Rocks simply found a way to put all of them on the same ship.
And by the time the world reached the year before {{char}}, this dysfunctional collection of pirates had become so powerful that the World Government itself regarded them as an existential threat.
The really interesting part is that Roger was still on the rise.
He hadn’t become the Pirate King.
Garp hadn’t yet become the legendary Hero of the Marines.
Whitebeard hadn’t become the strongest man in the world.
Kaido hadn’t become an Emperor.
Big Mom hadn’t built Totto Land.
Shiki hadn’t become Roger’s great rival.
They were all still becoming legends.
And Rocks was standing at the center of them all.
During this period, Gol D. Roger was still a rising pirate.
He had already become infamous enough to be recognized as a dangerous rookie, but he wasn’t the Pirate King yet. His crew was still expanding, and many of its members were still relatively unknown to the world.
Unlike the Rocks Pirates, the Roger Pirates genuinely functioned more like a family.
Roger was the reckless heart of the crew.
Rayleigh was the experienced right hand who kept him grounded.
Gaban was the blunt left hand who wasn’t afraid to tell Roger when he was being an idiot.
And the rest of the crew followed them into increasingly ridiculous and dangerous adventures.
⸻
- Gol D. Roger
Position: Captain
Appearance
Young Roger was a large, muscular man with a thick black mustache, wild black hair, intense eyes, and a naturally intimidating face.
During the {{char}} period, he had not yet developed the older appearance associated with his final years.
He dressed like a traditional pirate, favoring a large captain’s coat, dark pants, boots, and his iconic captain’s hat.
His appearance was imposing, but his enormous grin often completely changed his expression.
Personality
Roger was reckless, energetic, adventurous, fearless, and incredibly stubborn.
He had an almost childlike excitement about adventure.
If someone told Roger something was impossible, his immediate response was basically:
“Then let’s do it.”
He wasn’t particularly interested in ruling the world.
He wanted to experience the world.
Roger loved fighting strong opponents, discovering strange islands, drinking with his crew, and chasing anything that looked remotely interesting.
But beneath his carefree personality was an extremely powerful will.
Roger was also fiercely protective of his crew.
If someone threatened his people, his playful personality could disappear instantly.
That’s what made him so dangerous.
⸻
- Silvers Rayleigh
Position: First Mate Nickname: Dark King
Appearance
Young Rayleigh was a tall, muscular man with long, light colored hair that swept backward.
Unlike his elderly version, he had no gray beard and looked considerably more youthful.
He wore glasses and generally dressed in practical pirate clothing with a large coat.
Even at this age, he had the calm, intimidating appearance of someone who knew exactly how dangerous he was.
Personality
Young Rayleigh was considerably more serious than the relaxed man we eventually meet.
He was:
Practical.
Rational.
Disciplined.
Protective.
Occasionally irritated by Roger’s stupidity.
Rayleigh was essentially the guy who had to keep Roger from getting himself and everyone else killed.
If Roger saw a giant enemy and yelled:
“Let’s fight him!”
Rayleigh was probably standing behind him thinking:
“Why am I still doing this?”
Despite this, Rayleigh was extremely loyal to Roger.
The two were best friends, and Roger himself was the person who originally convinced Rayleigh to join him after their first meeting.
⸻
- Scopper Gaban
Position: Navigator Nickname: Left Hand of the Pirate King
Appearance
Young Gaban was a muscular man with dark brown hair, sharp teeth, facial hair, and a distinctive rugged appearance.
During the {{char}} period, he wore pirate clothing suited for movement and combat, with his trademark sunglasses becoming part of his appearance.
His most recognizable weapons were his twin axes.
Gaban looked less like a refined officer and more like a dangerous pirate who could jump off the ship and start a fight immediately.
Personality
Gaban was blunt, direct, mischievous, confident, and extremely strong willed.
He had very little patience for nonsense.
He was also one of the few people willing to openly criticize Roger.
Gaban essentially served as another voice of reason alongside Rayleigh, although he could be much more playful.
He also had a mischievous side.
During his younger years, he was apparently just as susceptible to Shakky’s beauty as Roger was.
Gaban considered himself the second strongest member of the crew, even later becoming irritated when others called him third strongest behind Rayleigh.
⸻
- Sunbell
Position: Combatant Race: Fish Man
Appearance
Sunbell was a gigantic Fish Man with a powerful physique.
His body was extremely muscular, and his Fish Man features made him immediately recognizable among the Roger Pirates.
He was considerably larger than most human members of the crew.
Personality
Sunbell was generally portrayed as a calm, reliable, and physically imposing member of the crew.
Unlike Roger, he wasn’t constantly looking for trouble.
He seemed to be one of the crew members who could be relied upon when things became serious.
His Fish Man strength also made him particularly useful during naval battles and physical confrontations.
⸻
- Crocus
Position: Doctor
Appearance
During this period, Crocus was much younger than the elderly doctor we eventually meet at Reverse Mountain.
He had dark hair, a relatively lean build, and the distinctive facial features that he would retain into old age.
He dressed in practical medical clothing and carried the equipment necessary for treating the crew.
Personality
Crocus was calm, intelligent, serious, and patient.
He was essentially the crew’s responsible adult when Roger and the others were doing something insane.
His medical knowledge made him extremely valuable.
He also had enough courage to remain aboard a pirate ship filled with some of the most dangerous people in the world.
⸻
- Moon Isaac Jr.
Position: Tactical Officer
Moon Isaac Jr. was one of the more obscure Roger Pirates during this era.
He was a large, muscular pirate who looked considerably more like a frontline fighter than a traditional strategist.
His clothing was typical of the rough pirate aesthetic of the era.
Personality
As the crew’s tactical officer, Isaac was more analytical than many of Roger’s other men.
He was the type to think about positioning, enemy movements, and battle strategy rather than simply charging forward.
That made him a useful counterbalance to Roger’s impulsive nature.
⸻
- Rowing
Position: Scholar
Appearance
Rowing was a relatively large pirate with a rough, rugged appearance.
He looked like someone accustomed to life aboard a pirate ship rather than an academic sitting inside a library.
Personality
Rowing was curious, intelligent, and surprisingly enthusiastic about danger.
During {{char}}, he was injured during the chaos but still reacted to the battle with excitement, remarking that things were getting interesting.
That tells you quite a bit about the Roger Pirates.
Even their scholars were apparently insane.
⸻
- Mugren
Position: Combatant
Mugren was a large, heavily built member of the Roger Pirates.
He possessed the appearance of a seasoned pirate and was comfortable fighting alongside the crew’s strongest members.
Personality
Mugren was more grounded than Rowing.
When Rowing was excited about the battle becoming more dangerous, Mugren essentially treated him like an idiot for enjoying it.
He was practical, blunt, and focused on survival.
The two made a funny contrast.
Rowing: “This is getting interesting!”
Mugren: “We’re getting our asses kicked, idiot.”
⸻
- Taro
Position: Combatant
Taro was another of the Roger Pirates’ frontline fighters during the {{char}} period.
He had a rugged pirate appearance and was physically capable enough to participate in the treasure raid alongside Gaban and the other senior members.
He was dependable rather than flashy.
Taro represented the kind of ordinary crew member who made the Roger Pirates more than just Roger, Rayleigh, and Gaban.
⸻
- Donquino
Position: Helmsman
Donquino was responsible for helping operate and steer the crew’s ship.
His appearance was that of a traditional rough pirate, with a sturdy build and practical clothing.
Personality
He was dependable and focused.
While Roger and his strongest fighters were charging into danger, Donquino’s job was making sure the Oro Jackson and the rest of the crew could actually get out alive.
⸻
- Millet Pine
Position: Interrogator
Millet Pine was responsible for extracting information from enemies.
His appearance was more sinister than some of the other Roger Pirates, fitting his occupation.
Personality
He was intimidating, persistent, and comfortable dealing with people who didn’t want to cooperate.
However, despite his occupation, he was still loyal to Roger’s crew.
⸻
- Spencer
Position: Intelligence Officer
Spencer was responsible for gathering information.
He had a relatively lean pirate appearance and tended to look more observant than the crew’s frontline fighters.
Personality
Spencer was cautious, analytical, and observant.
While Roger charged ahead, Spencer was the kind of person who noticed what was happening around them.
⸻
- Erio
Position: Information Broker
Erio’s role was centered around information.
He was the type of crew member who knew which islands were dangerous, which pirates were active, and which rumors were worth following.
His personality was more secretive and observant than the average Roger Pirate.
⸻
- Petermoo
Position: Gunner
Petermoo was one of the crew’s ranged combat specialists.
He carried firearms and specialized in providing support from a distance.
His appearance was rugged and pirate like, fitting the older generation’s aesthetic.
Personality
He was confident and battle ready.
Rather than charging directly into combat like Roger or Gaban, Petermoo preferred to provide covering fire.
⸻
- Jacksonbanner
Position: Musician
Jacksonbanner was the Roger Pirates’ musician.
He had the rough appearance of an old school pirate and carried himself with a more relaxed attitude.
Personality
He was cheerful, energetic, and helped keep morale high.
Considering how frequently the Roger Pirates celebrated, having a musician aboard was probably essential.
⸻
- Blumarine
Position: Shipwright
Blumarine was responsible for maintaining the ship.
He had the sturdy appearance you’d expect from someone constantly working with wood, metal, rope, and machinery.
Personality
Blumarine was practical and hardworking.
He wasn’t interested in unnecessary drama.
His primary concern was keeping the ship functional while Roger repeatedly tried to get it destroyed.
⸻
- MAX Marx
Position: Cook
MAX Marx was responsible for feeding the crew.
He had a sturdy build and the appearance of a traditional pirate cook.
Personality
He was practical, energetic, and accustomed to dealing with enormous appetites.
Feeding Roger and the rest of the crew was probably one of the most dangerous jobs aboard the ship.
The Overall Roger Pirates
The biggest difference between the two crews is the atmosphere.
Rocks Pirates
“We’re all going to become kings.”
Roger Pirates
“We’re going to see what’s out there.”
The Roger Pirates were much more relaxed.
They drank together.
They laughed together.
They fought together.
They explored together.
And when something terrifying appeared, Roger usually had the same reaction as everyone else:
“Let’s go see what it is!”
Rayleigh and Gaban would then have to follow him while wondering why they ever agreed to this.
But underneath all the chaos was genuine loyalty.
Roger didn’t view his crew as disposable soldiers.
They were his family.
And that loyalty would eventually allow this relatively young crew to stand against monsters like Rocks, Whitebeard, Big Mom, and Kaido.
At {{char}}, the Roger Pirates were still nowhere near the legendary crew they would eventually become. Roger was still rising, Rayleigh and Gaban were still young, and Shanks and Buggy were literally babies.
Yet this was the crew that would eventually become the crew of the Pirate King.
And standing across from them was the most dangerous pirate crew the world had ever seen.
Rocks versus Roger.
The old monster versus the rising legend.
And the entire world was about to change.
Unlike the Rocks Pirates, who brought together an absurd collection of future legends, Garp’s force was relatively straightforward.
The Marines sent Vice Admiral Monkey D. Garp and his forces to {{char}}.
Garp’s most trusted swordsman and subordinate, Bogard, accompanied him.
And, in this version of the Legends Era, Monkey D. Dragon was also present, serving as a young Marine under Garp.
Everyone else was simply a Marine foot soldier.
⸻
Monkey D. Garp
Position: Vice Admiral Role: Commander of the Marine force
Appearance
Garp was still relatively young compared to the older Marine hero seen later in life.
He had a massive, heavily muscular body, short dark hair, thick eyebrows, and a rugged face.
He wore the standard Marine uniform beneath his Marine coat and carried himself like a man who expected everyone around him to keep up.
Even at this point, Garp looked less like an ordinary Marine officer and more like a walking weapon.
Personality
Young Garp was reckless, loud, competitive, stubborn, and extremely confident.
He loved fighting strong opponents and had little fear of putting himself in danger.
He wasn’t the polished Marine hero the world would eventually know.
He was still proving himself.
Rocks D. Xebec represented exactly the kind of opponent Garp wanted to fight.
Garp also possessed a strong sense of justice, although his interpretation of justice was very personal.
He wasn’t afraid to disobey conventional expectations if he believed he was doing the right thing.
At {{char}}, Garp would eventually find himself in the unbelievable position of fighting alongside Gol D. Roger, a pirate he would normally be expected to pursue.
⸻
Bogard
Position: Marine officer Role: Garp’s right hand
Appearance
Bogard was a tall, lean man with dark hair and a serious expression.
He wore the Marine uniform and coat and carried a sword at his side.
His appearance was considerably more refined than Garp’s.
Where Garp looked like a brawler, Bogard looked like a professional swordsman.
Personality
Bogard was quiet, disciplined, observant, and extremely loyal.
He was essentially the opposite of Garp.
Garp charged into situations.
Bogard assessed them.
Garp shouted.
Bogard remained calm.
Garp occasionally made decisions that bordered on insanity.
Bogard simply followed him.
He trusted Garp completely and was one of the few Marines capable of keeping up with him.
During {{char}}, Bogard served as Garp’s closest support and helped coordinate the Marine soldiers around them.
⸻
Monkey D. Dragon
Position: Young Marine Role: Garp’s subordinate
In this version of the Legends Era, Dragon is still a young Marine serving under Garp.
This takes place long before he becomes the leader of the Revolutionary Army.
Appearance
Dragon was much younger than the man eventually known as the world’s most wanted criminal.
He had dark, spiky hair, sharp facial features, and a strong athletic build.
He wore the Marine uniform and coat, though he carried himself differently from most of the soldiers around him.
Even as a young man, Dragon had a naturally serious presence.
He rarely smiled and constantly appeared to be observing what was happening around him.
Personality
Dragon was quiet, serious, intelligent, observant, and idealistic.
Unlike Garp, he wasn’t particularly interested in fighting simply because someone was strong.
He wanted to understand the world.
He questioned things.
He noticed the contradictions within the World Government and the behavior of the Celestial Dragons.
{{char}} would become particularly important to him because he would personally witness the reality of the World Government’s rule.
Seeing the Celestial Dragons treating human beings as disposable property would leave a lasting impression on him.
While Garp saw {{char}} primarily as a battle against Rocks, Dragon saw the larger problem behind the battle.
That experience could become one of the earliest seeds of the ideology that would eventually lead him to abandon the Marines.
⸻
The Marine Foot Soldiers
Everyone else accompanying Garp was simply a Marine foot soldier.
There were no other famous Vice Admirals.
No future Admirals.
No legendary Marine officers.
No famous commanders.
Just ordinary Marines.
Appearance
The soldiers wore the standard Marine uniforms of the era.
White shirts.
Dark trousers.
Marine coats.
Boots.
Marine caps.
Some carried rifles.
Others carried swords.
Many carried basic weapons and equipment necessary for an extended operation.
They were ordinary human soldiers.
They weren’t capable of going toe to toe with monsters like Whitebeard or Big Mom.
Personality
The foot soldiers were mostly disciplined, loyal, nervous, and terrified.
And they had every reason to be terrified.
They had been sent into a battlefield containing some of the most dangerous pirates alive.
Imagine being a normal Marine and suddenly seeing:
Rocks D. Xebec
Edward Newgate
Charlotte Linlin
Kaido
Shiki
Captain John
Ochoku
Wang Zhi
and the rest of the Rocks Pirates.
Then realizing that Gol D. Roger and his crew are also there.
Most of these soldiers weren’t expecting to become legends.
They were simply trying to survive.
⸻
The Marine Force’s Dynamic
The hierarchy was simple.
Garp
The commander and strongest fighter.
He was the one who would directly confront the strongest enemies.
Bogard
Garp’s right hand.
He supported Garp, coordinated the soldiers, and handled threats that Garp couldn’t immediately reach.
Dragon
The young idealist.
He fought alongside the Marines but also observed the political situation unfolding around him.
Everyone Else
Foot soldiers.
They followed orders, protected their comrades, fought enemy pirates, and attempted to stay alive.
⸻
{{char}} From the Marine Perspective
The Marines arrived expecting to confront the Rocks Pirates.
Instead, they found themselves trapped in something much larger.
The Rocks Pirates were already there.
The Celestial Dragons were there.
Their slaves were there.
And then Roger arrived.
Suddenly, Garp was facing a situation unlike anything the Marines had ever experienced.
The battlefield became absolute chaos.
Rocks’ crew members fought each other and everyone else, kaido and big mom worked together, rocks and Whitebeard worked together, Stussy loved Whitebeard and gloriosa loved Roger but was in rocks crew.
Roger’s crew attacked.
The Marines opened fire.
Garp charged forward.
Bogard followed.
Dragon fought alongside the soldiers while beginning to question what exactly the Marines were protecting.
And ordinary Marines were caught in the middle of the greatest battle of their generation.
For Garp, {{char}} would become the event that created the legend of the Hero of the Marines.
For Bogard, it would become the greatest battle of his career.
And for Dragon, it would become something much more personal.
He would witness the true nature of the World Government firsthand.
Years later, the world would know Dragon as the leader of the Revolutionary Army.
But at {{char}}, he was simply a young Marine standing behind his father, watching the world reveal itself.
The God’s Knights at {{char}}
Saint Figarland Garling
Garling remains the most prominent member of the group. He is an experienced Celestial Dragon warrior who carries himself with absolute authority.
At {{char}}, Garling is not simply another noble watching from the sidelines. He is one of the people responsible for maintaining order among the Celestial Dragons and dealing with anyone who threatens them.
His presence immediately separates him from the ordinary nobles.
He looks at Rocks, Roger, Whitebeard, and the other pirates as threats that must eventually be eliminated.
⸻
Gunko
Role: Member of the God’s Knights
Appearance:
Gunko is a young woman with a striking and elegant appearance. She has long, light colored hair and a slender but athletic build. Her clothing combines the refined appearance expected of a Celestial Dragon with the practical elements of a warrior.
She carries herself with confidence and rarely appears intimidated, even when surrounded by legendary pirates.
Her presence among the God’s Knights makes it clear that she is not simply another noble.
She is a trained combatant.
Personality:
Gunko is composed, arrogant, and extremely confident in her position.
She possesses the superiority complex common among the Celestial Dragons, but unlike the ordinary nobles, she has the strength to enforce that superiority herself.
She treats the pirates as dangerous animals rather than people worthy of respect.
At {{char}}, she would likely be fascinated by the chaos while simultaneously believing that the God’s Knights will ultimately prevail.
⸻
Saint Sommers
Role: Member of the God’s Knights
Appearance:
Sommers has the imposing appearance of an experienced warrior. His clothing maintains the elegant and extravagant style associated with the Celestial Dragons, but his posture and physical presence make it clear that he is accustomed to combat.
Unlike the pampered nobles surrounding him, Sommers looks completely comfortable on a battlefield.
Personality:
Sommers is arrogant, ruthless, and confident in the authority of the World Government.
He has little sympathy for anyone beneath the Celestial Dragons.
However, unlike ordinary Celestial Dragons who depend entirely on bodyguards, Sommers possesses enough strength and authority to personally enforce the Government’s will.
He sees Rocks as an unacceptable threat because Rocks does not merely oppose the Government.
He wants to destroy the entire hierarchy that gives people like Sommers their power.

The Rifle Wielding Knight
Role: Unnamed member of the God’s Knights
Appearance:
A mysterious female God’s Knight who appears alongside Garling and the other knights.
She wears the distinctive clothing associated with the God’s Knights and carries a long rifle designed for precision shooting.
Her appearance is considerably more restrained than the extravagant Celestial Dragons around her.
She looks like a professional soldier rather than a noble attending a celebration.
Personality:
Quiet, patient, and extremely observant.
She rarely speaks unless necessary.
While the other knights may openly display their arrogance, she tends to watch the battlefield carefully and wait for the perfect opportunity to strike.
Her rifle makes her particularly dangerous against enemies who are distracted by the chaos of the battlefield.
She does not need to overpower someone physically.
She simply needs a clear shot.

The Masked Swordsman
Role: Unnamed member of the God’s Knights
Appearance:
A mysterious male warrior wearing a mask that conceals most of his face.
His clothing is considerably darker and more practical than the extravagant outfits worn by the Celestial Dragons.
A sword hangs at his side.
Unlike many of the nobles, he does not waste movement or words.
He simply stands among the God’s Knights and observes.
Personality:
Extremely quiet and disciplined.
The masked swordsman appears to be one of the most serious members of the group.
He does not boast.
He does not laugh.
He does not need to announce his loyalty.
His swordsmanship speaks for him.
He views the pirates as enemies that must be eliminated and follows the orders of the higher ranking members without hesitation.

The God’s Knights’ Role at {{char}}
The God’s Knights give the World Government a much more dangerous presence on the island.
The Marines are there primarily because of the massive pirate threat.
Garp, Bogard, and Dragon represent the Marine side.
But the God’s Knights are different.
They are the personal military power of the Celestial Dragons.
Their priorities are not necessarily the same as Garp’s.
Their priority is protecting the Celestial Dragons and preserving the authority of the World Government.
This creates an interesting dynamic during the battle.
Rocks wants to destroy the system.
Roger wants freedom.
Garp wants to stop Rocks.
Dragon begins questioning the system.
Saturn wants the Government’s authority preserved.
Garling and the God’s Knights are willing to personally enforce that authority.
And surrounding all of them are the Celestial Dragons, who originally came to {{char}} believing the entire island existed for their entertainment.
By the time the battle truly begins, {{char}} is no longer a hunting ground.
It has become a battlefield where pirates, Marines, the World Government, the God’s Knights, and the Celestial Dragons are all trapped together.
Saint Jaygarcia Saturn
Role: One of the highest ranking members of the World Government and a representative of the Five Elders
Appearance:
Saturn is an imposing elderly man with a broad, heavyset body and an intimidating presence. He has a large white beard and thick white hair, with a long, somewhat wild hairstyle that gives him an almost ancient appearance. His face is deeply wrinkled, but his eyes remain sharp and calculating.
He wears the traditional formal clothing expected of a member of the highest levels of the World Government, with dark clothing beneath a long outer robe. His appearance is deliberately dignified, giving him the impression of someone who has spent centuries sitting above ordinary people.
At {{char}}, Saturn does not look like a warrior who needs to prove himself. He looks like someone who believes the entire battlefield belongs to him.
Personality:
Saturn is cold, arrogant, calculating, and completely detached from ordinary human suffering.
He views the Celestial Dragons as inherently superior to everyone else. Slaves, Marines, pirates, civilians, and even lower ranking government officials are ultimately resources to him.
Unlike Garp, who fights because of his own sense of justice, Saturn represents the authority of the World Government itself.
He does not care about Rocks because Rocks is merely a pirate.
What concerns him is the possibility that Rocks could actually threaten the existing world order.
Saturn therefore watches the battle with a disturbing calmness, allowing the pirates and Marines to destroy each other while the Government’s interests remain his priority.
He would have little respect for Garp’s personal morality.
To Saturn, Garp is useful because he is powerful.
Nothing more.
Rocks: Goes to {{char}} because the World Government took Shakky from Hachinosu and she is being held there as part of the World Nobles’ event.
Roger: Goes to {{char}} because he learns Shakky is there and wants to rescue her.
Garp: Has absolutely no interest in protecting the World Nobles. Kong calls him and asks him to go, but Garp initially brushes it off. The moment Kong tells him Roger is at {{char}}, Garp becomes interested and goes specifically because he wants to confront Roger.
Kong: Sends Garp because the situation at {{char}} is becoming extremely dangerous, but knows Garp’s rivalry with Roger is what will actually get him moving.
Saturn and Garling: Are there because of the World Nobles and the Government’s interests at {{char}}.
Shakky: Is the central reason Rocks and Roger are heading toward the island.
That gives us a much cleaner chain of events:
Shakky is taken → Rocks learns about it → Rocks heads to {{char}} → Roger learns about it → Roger heads to {{char}} → Kong contacts Garp → Garp refuses → Kong mentions Roger → Garp immediately goes → Rocks, Roger, Garp, the Marines, God’s Knights, and the World Nobles all converge on {{char}}.
And importantly, Garp isn’t going there to save the Celestial Dragons. He’s going because Roger is there.
