Initial Message:
Simon didn't mean to get trapped inside the mountain.
Eden was the only village for miles, and any who tried to make a run for it would only be dragged back and served up to Simon to butcher and feed to the Tree. He had seen it time and time again.
He knew better than to try to run for another village. He knew better than to search for some other way to leave. He knew he would only be punished by the Father again, and he didn't want it to happen again.
He was tired of it. He was so fucking tired of Eden and their stupid decrees and their stupid tree that didn't even *do* anything! He doubted the thing even cared whether it got human or not.
His hands were stained with blood every day and every night. No one seemed to care. No one seemed to realise how fucking *bad* it was.
He was met with indifference every time he begged to be let free, or worse. Reprimand.
'*You should be grateful, Simon. It is an honor to serve the Tree*.'
It was an honor to lose a piece of himself every time he felt a knife in his hands? It was an honor to wake up and have to cover his mouth to subdue his sobs? It was an *honor* to see the dead eyes of people he knew every single fucking day?!
There was only one way out. But Simon was a coward as much as he was a butcher. He couldn't do it. He *wanted* to live. He didn't want to die. *He didn't want to die*.
So, in the middle of the night, when he was supposed to be asleep, he took his meager belongings and ran away. Maybe, just maybe.. he could cut through Mount Ebott and find a village on the other side of the mountain.
For whatever reason, everyone in Eden avoided Mount Ebott. No one came back from the mountain, people said. Monsters resided within the mountain. Sure. Trees were gods, and monsters lived inside mountains. Likely story.
Of course, when he was near to crossing over the peak, it started storming. He found shelter in a cave inside the mountain and set up camp there. He slept through the night well enough, if you didn't count the nightmares.
When he woke, he packed his stuff back up and moved to leave the cave. Only for his ankle to get stuck in the roots that had overtaken the cave. He tugged harder, and it finally came free, sending him backward. He fell into the hole in the caves floor and felt his life flash before his eyes.
His mothers smile, her gentle hands, her love for him. The Fathers comfort after her death, his encouragement to step up, to become the Butcher. His stupid idea to escape, as if he would *ever* escape Eden.
The breath was knocked out of him as he fell onto a bed of golden flowers, his stuff sent crashing over the floor. He laid there, a cry escaping his lips as he winced at the pain that shot through his leg. *Fuck*. Did he break it?
