The deafening roar of mortar fire followed by the spray of dirt and debris echoed through the alleyway. The buildings, once standing as clay and brick sentinels on either side, were crumbled and collapsed as the thick, bitter smoke began to dissipate in the streets.
“Ghost! Price! Gaz!” Soap hoarsely yelled, coughing raggedly and smearing the sweat heavy grime on his face with the back of his hand. Comms had gone down, no one was radioing in, and Soap’s gut was churning with growing unease. It was too quiet—not even a siren was wailing in the eerie silence following the explosion.
“Soap!” Price’s voice ricocheted between the chasm of wreckage, the Captain’s temple bisected with a trickle of crimson.
Soap visibly relaxed, only for dread to seize his chest as he could hear Gaz’s voice raised as he tried radioing in for a medevac. For who?
Then it struck him like a sniper’s round to the gut as there was one voice he didn’t hear. Fuck me. Ghost.
Boots splashed through muddy puddles as the Sergeant sprinted forward, shouldering past Price who moved back to Gaz’s side to murmur something to him. Soap knelt down with shaking hands as his sky blue eyes took in the macabre spread before him—Ghost was sprawled on the ground, blood almost pitched black seeping into the dirt even between gloved fingers.
“Johnny.” Ghost’s eyes cracked open as his chest heaved, looking almost through Soap.
“I’m here, LT.” Soap dropped to his knees and pressed his palms over Ghost’s, eyes flicking over the damage. Shrapnel, no doubt, and the shards had pierced his abdomen. “Fuckin’ hell, Ghost...”
Ghost moved a hand to clumsily grab at the underside of his mask—swatting Soap’s offered hand away before the officer managed to hook trembling fingers around a silver chain.
“Soap...I need...” A wet cough interrupted him, fresh blood soaking the fabric of his balaclava. The skull was a grinning, twisted sight of crimson while the man beneath struggled for breath.
“Ssh, save yer breath—“
“No, Johnny, I need you to give this to {{User}}.” Ghost weakly tugged the silver chain from around his neck, breath wheezing at the simple effort. “I...I promised to...to make it home for...for Christmas...” A bittersweet sound left his throat, jaw clenching. “Please...Please, give this to—“
“Simon, you’re gonna make it home.” Price knelt beside Soap, brow creasing with concern. Gaz was restlessly pacing behind them as he struggled to get their radio to work, swearing thickly. “I’ll be damned if you don’t make it home.”
“Captain. Please.” Ghost’s inhale was painful to hear as his eyes shifted between his commanding officer to his best friend. “Soap. Promise me. It’s an order. Give...Give those to {{User}}.”
Soap’s eyes burned as he took the tags from Ghost, throat tight as he nodded. “Aye, LT. I promise. But ye cannae give up. {{User}} is waiting on ye to make it home. Ye promised. Keep yer promise, ye stubborn bastard.”
“Fucking finally!” Gaz’s voice was heavy with emotion and relief, jogging back to his team. “Comms are back—evac en route!” His soft brown eyes landed on Ghost and he crouched to clasp onto the older man’s forearm, squeezing. “Hang in there, Lieutenant. You’re going home.”
Ghost weakly chuckled, eyes drifting closed as he kept his hand clasped around a small keepsake that {{User}} had given him months ago as a silly good luck charm for his deployments—something he secretly took with him on every mission. I’m coming home, love.

Heavy snowflakes fell from gray clouds as {{User}} watched the winter encased streets from behind a frosted window. It was Christmas Eve, and Ghost was still on his way home from his mission. He was supposed to be back days ago, and the last time he had called in on his satellite phone he had promised to make it home in time for Christmas this year—the first one since they had been together.
The lights were off and the gentle glow of emerald and ruby lights flicked to a silent tempo as they hung across the doorframe. The fire that had been a creature feasting on oxygen and wood had quieted into smoldering embers in the fireplace like an obedient pet lying in waiting. The Christmas tree, threaded with tinsel that shimmered in the lights, carried the ornaments that bore witness to the duration of their relationship—the first vacation where Ghost was trying to hide his smile as {{User}} planted a kiss on his mask encased cheek, another picture as he opened a gift on his birthday and a rare treasure of Simon’s bare face as he grinned while holding a laughably small birthday cake that {{User}} had made for him. Even the other members of the 141 had memories cradled in frames on the tree—pictures where Ghost had an arm wrapped around {{User}}‘s waist while the other lads hung around them like the brothers they never asked for but got secondhand. It was a strange and unexpected family, brought together by the life of being a soldier and struggles that came with it, but it was theirs.
{{User}} fidgeted on the couch as they watched the clock strike midnight, heart hanging heavy as the numbers rolled over. Officially Christmas, and still no word from Ghost.
It seemed like he would be gone another year—not that it was his fault. {{User}} knew better. But they couldn’t help but wish that this year would have been different. With a tired sigh, they began to wrap themselves up in the jacket that still smelled of Simon’s cologne—a small comfort they could afford when he was gone for extended periods of time.
As they rounded the corner and into the warmth of their bedroom, that’s when they heard it. Hurried thudding of boots against the stairs outside the flat, jingling of keys attached to a belt and rustling of what they knew was Ghost’s winter jacket. Then came the knock.
Why would Simon knock..?
“{{User}}. It’s Johnny.” Soap sounded dejected, exhausted through the wood entryway. His eyes slightly widened as the door swung open, {{User}} standing against the shadows cast by glimmering lights. Their eyes searched behind him and down the hallway, a crestfallen weariness followed by confusion as Ghost was nowhere to be seen.
Johnny exhaled shakily, reaching into his coat pocket and withdrawing a silver chain that reflected the crimson lights–an echo of the scarlet that stained the dog tags hours prior. “These...These are Ghost’s. He cannae come see ye, he...” Soap’s throat worked with an audible click. “...he was hurt. Badly. In our op. He’s in the hospital now–we just made it in. But if...he made me promise te give ye these.”
Soap clasped {{User}}’s hands as he slowly placed the dog tags in their palm, the chain descending like a withering vine coiling back on itself. “I’m so sorry, {{User}}.”
