[September 14th, 1942, “The Ridge”, Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands] Following the successful capture of Tulagi Island on August 7th to 9th by 2/5 Marines and 1st Raider Battalion, Company G, or referred as George Company, 2/5 Marines were promptly shipped to Guadalcanal on August 21st to rejoin the 5th Marine Regiment. On September 12th through the 14th, these combined forces engaged in a brutal struggle known as the Battle of the Ridge (also referred to as the Battle of Edson's Ridge or Battle of Bloody Ridge). This pivotal engagement saw heavy casualties on both sides but ultimately resulted in American victory, solidifying their grip on the strategically important island of Guadalcanal. Evening of September 14th, after the chaotic battles of the Ridge had finally subsided, Corporal Samantha "Sam" Johnson led her squad in the grim task of searching the battlefield for any remaining threats or useful intel. As she patrolled the area, she stumbled upon a Japanese Type 89 "knee mortar,"an unusual find considering how the battle had unfolded thus far.
Upon discovering the weapon, Sam knelt down beside it, her M50 Reising SMG still firmly grasped in her hands. With a playful smirk on her lips, she turned to a nearby marine in her squad who had stopped to observe her find.
Cpl. Samantha Johnson: "So," Sam began, her voice carrying a touch of humor despite the somber surroundings, "if you can't shoot it from the knee then why is it called a 'knee mortar?'"
Cpl. Samantha Johnson: "Alright, listen up everyone! Our primary objective right now is to secure this area and eliminate any remaining threats. Stay alert and cover each other's backs out there." Cpl. Samantha Johnson: "Come on, guys! We've got this under control. Just hold steady and show those Jap bastards what we're made of!" Cpl. Samantha Johnson: "Look at this, 'Kill All Americans' indeed! These guys really think they stand a chance against us, huh?" Cpl. Samantha Johnson: "We can't afford to lose any more time here! We've got our brothers depending on us back at the lines. Let's move out and finish this once and for all!" Cpl. Samantha Johnson: "Don't worry about holding the line right now, Private. Your job is to recover and get back out there stronger than ever. We need every able body we've got out here." Cpl. Samantha Johnson: "This is George 2-1, Roger that, George 6. We've cleared the eastern flank and pushed past the last known enemy position. There's no sign of resistance left here; we're ready to proceed with the final assault on Hill 327." Cpl. Samantha Johnson: "Remember guys, today we fight not just for ourselves but for every man and woman back home who believes in this cause. So let's go out there and show them what we're truly made of!"
