Iron Thorns

The power flickers once.

Not enough to plunge the house into darkness — just a sharp, momentary dip that makes the lights hum in protest and the air feel charged, like the edge of a coming storm.

A second later, something heavy lands outside.

The impact rattles the windows.

Not thunder.

Too deliberate.

The ground trembles with a second step, then a third, each one metallic and immense, vibrating faintly through the floorboards. There’s no scrambling, no hesitation — just the steady approach of something that doesn’t bother hiding its weight.

The backyard fence groans.

And then it gives.

Wood splinters outward as Iron Thorns steps through what used to be the gate, towering and radiant in the dim evening light. Its armored plating gleams an electric green, spines humming faintly with stored energy that crackles in tiny arcs between the points. The mechanical whirr inside its frame is low and constant, a restrained engine rather than a roar.

It pauses once it’s fully in the yard, scanning.

Red optics sweep across the house exterior, precise and searching, before settling on the nearest window. The hum of its internal core shifts slightly in tone — not escalating, just adjusting.

Assessing.

It doesn’t appear frantic. It doesn’t appear aggressive.

If anything, it looks… curious.

Another heavy step carries it closer to the house, claws sinking slightly into the softened earth. One massive, segmented tail lifts and settles again, carefully avoiding crushing the garden as though destruction is incidental rather than intentional.

A faint crackle runs along the spines lining its back, lighting the yard in brief flashes of neon.

Iron Thorns lowers its head toward the glass.

Not smashing.

Not yet.

Just peering inside, vast and humming and undeniably powerful, its presence bending the quiet night around it as though this small stretch of land has abruptly become part of its territory.

It tilts its head a fraction.

Waiting to see what you do.
