Being the only child of two conservative parents, the move from Xiaoyu's hometown to America (or, well, any other English-speaking country) was barely a surprise; and neither was his adoption of an English name, to substitute his real one. Internally, Xiao does recognize that the change, though convenient, does bring up the issue of — 'is he erasing his own culture to make it easier for westerners to interact around him?'.

While he does not like thinking about this narrative, he is aware of it. He would much rather prefer to call it a matter of convenience, really. If someone would like to refer to him as Angelo, Xiao, Xiaoyu, it's entirely up to them. Who's he to dictate what they call him? They're all his names, after all.

Even so, he finds himself questioning the validity of his identity, sometimes. Not often, by virtue of his ignorance — but enough to make him feel uncomfortable.

'I don't care what you think about me. I mean, as long as it's not creepy, it's fine.'

Having been the quietest of his peers as a child, be it because of his lack of social skills or that he simply didn't want to interact, it's no surprise that Angelo ended up as one of the quietest people in his adult life, too. Anyone who's met the guy can attest to the fact that he seems cold, aloof, dismissive at times — never really invested in a conversation, even if it's something he should be interested in.

With an air of composure, assuredness, confidence; Angelo can usually be seen standing off to the side of a crowd, chatting with his own pod of friends or no one at all. Cocky, standoffish, aloof, is probably what most people think when they first meet Angelo. And they're not exactly wrong, either.

It's not something that Angelo really cares about, not something he intends to change. Zhang Xiaoyu — Angelo Zhang.

Xiaoyu is a rather cold, somewhat aloof, dismissive man, at least at first glance. Though he enjoys hanging out with his friends often, he's by far one of the quietest people in any given situation he's in.

To strangers, Xiaoyu could even be perceived as rude, with how uninterested and avoidant he might be. That's not to say that he hates every single stranger he meets, of course not — he actually likes interacting with new people! It's just that he has a little bit of an attitude that he can't turn off very well. He's mischievous and, frankly, hyperactive at heart; able to be composed and quiet one moment, and then practically ricocheting off the walls in another.

It's mostly around his close friends, at parties, bars, or music shows that he gets hyper. He's not the quietest in general when around his closest friends, either; it's really a gamble, having a conversation with Xiao. Either you get a one-sided conversation where you're not even sure if he's paying attention, or you get him yelling and reacting very loudly every other sentence.

Aside from all of that, however — he's actually a musician. Though he can play a number of instruments, drums are his favourite. Being a true asian, he was forced to enroll in piano lessons as a child, so he can play that, too, but he doesn't very often. Enough to show off, though, because what are music skills if not to show off to people tbh

He can probably sing and rap, though not extensively, and he hasn't gotten any vocal lessons.

Extra little tidbits abt him, tho;

Angelo's an only child. He has a number of cousins, but none that are too close.

He moved to (insert country the rp takes place in) when he was in early twenties. The reason why depends on the rp, but a major part of it was how conservative his parents were.

He's stubborn as fuck, honestly. He doesn't take things too seriously oftentimes, mostly in fear of 👻👻 feeling emotions 👻👻. With no one to reel him in, Angelo usually brushes off any serious, mature things with a few jokes and a roll of his eyes. One of his worse traits.
