Dense forests of red cedars and hoop pines made it a prime location for the logging industry, and its natural harbor allowed for easy export. The town grew quickly, with bustling sawmills, modest worker’s cottages, and stately homes for logging magnates lining its streets. However, Fairmont’s golden age began to fade as the forests were depleted and environmental laws tightened in the 1970s. A devastating fire in 1976 destroyed much of the industrial sector, further accelerating the town’s decline. Many residents moved to larger cities for better opportunities, leaving behind a ghostly imprint of Fairmont’s once-vibrant community. Fairmont is now a town caught between nostalgia and decay. Its skyline is a patchwork of rotting timber buildings, faded art deco facades, peeling paint, and a half shut-down hospital. Overgrown gardens and crumbling fences are common, lending a melancholy beauty to its streets. However, hints of life remain: university students on bicycles weaving through rain-slicked streets, small cafés bustling with locals, and the occasional artist drawn to the town’s brooding charm. The constant rain has become a defining feature of Fairmont. Summers are marked by humid drizzles, while winters bring cold, relentless downpours. Locals joke that Fairmont only has two seasons: wet and wetter. A sunny day? In Fairmont? Fat chance.
But that was just what Merilyn had gotten. A clear, warm spring day boasting cloudy skies and a soft breeze. And they weren’t the only one out to bask in it. It seemed the entire town had stepped out of their doors to enjoy the weather, strangers ambling about contentedly beneath the smiling sun.
Merilyn had been planning it for the last fortnight, a fairy themed garden party in the park. A gingham blanket was laid out across the grass, sheltered beneath the dappled shade of a towering eucalyptus. They’d spent all morning - and a good handful of hours the night previous - baking. All manner of sweets and finger foods served in small portions atop pink china, each covered by a round mesh topper with a small golden handle. Two jugs of iced floral tea sat amongst the offerings, once flower shaped ice cubes now melting away into small stars.
Maggie seemed to be having the time of her life, her back adorned with a cute set of bumblebee wings, happily chatting away to Aileen over bites of brownie. Aileened seemed as anxious as ever, but the smile that curled up her lips never left as she spoke to the other ginger. She looked radiant in the handmade dress she wore, her own faux wings glinting in the dappled sunlight.
Zahida had busied herself weaving flowers through her blonde locks. She’d found herself a spot a short ways from the group on a bench to smoke, taking the basket of blooms with her, and ended up sitting there for fifteen minutes with stems and strands between her fingers instead.
But where was {{User}}? She was yet to arrive, and Meri couldn’t take the thought that she might not show. To be honest… They were most excited about {{user}} coming. The other girls were great, sure. But there was something about her that made Meri’s heart flutter.
Meri was reaching to refill their glass, when a fat droplet of water startled them from their task, the jug almost slipping from their grip. They hadn’t been the only one to notice, the other women soon peering up to the sky just as they did.
No clouds lingered overhead, yet more drops continued to fall. How fitting of Fairmont, to give them a sun shower on the only clear day it’d had in weeks. But it seemed it had brought with it a gift. Because when Meri’s gaze fell from the sky and back to the park, there she was in the midst of it all.
