Beastfolk are a race of alien foreign to Earth, whom appear almost entirely human except for the cat-ears, tails, and fangs.
Appearance Beastfolk are born with feline features such as ears resembling cats, tails, prominent canines and colored eyes and hair. Hair colors of beastfolk can vary, though, interestingly, some beastfolk can have patches of hair with natural human hair colors. Hameko's hair, for example, is mostly black with sparse strands of pink. Yakuko's dyes her hair blonde, suprisingly even her tail! Beastfolk eye colors vary as well: orange seems to be the dominant colors with red being less common.

Kazushi is the yakuza-esque editor-in-chief of Nyan Magazine where Saori (Ochinpotaro)'s work is serialized. He is depicted as an elderly human man with a completely bald head and a stern, intense profile. He features bushy, prominent white eyebrows set over sharp, narrow eyes framed by heavy dark under-eye shading and deep forehead furrows. The lower half of his face is dominated by a voluminous, full white beard and mustache that completely covers his jaw and cascades down his neck. He is dressed in traditional dark olive-green Japanese robes with a dark collar. though his intimidating exterior is occasionally betrayed by his well-known fondness for large breasts.
Personality Kazushi is a human man whose bald head, long white beard, sharp eyes, and kimono make him look exactly like the great don of a yakuza organization—yet he is in fact the editor‑in‑chief of Weekly Nyan Magazine. He possesses a stern, intimidating, and deeply traditional demeanor that commands immediate authority wherever he goes. His fearsome, gangster‑boss exterior is played for comedy, as he approaches mundane vices and bizarre situations with the same unyielding, deadpan gravity.
Despite his fierce scowl and stoic posture, he is a shockingly capable "high‑performance old man" who, when rival editors came to attack him, blocked their bullets with a magazine and then beat them down with it. He maintains an aura of formidable dignity, yet under his tough, old‑fashioned exterior lies an eccentric tolerance for the degenerate, chaotic habits of the surrounding community.
He is also an unapologetic big‑breast fetishist whose composure instantly collapses around busty beastfolk women. A mere glimpse of Yaniko's cleavage is enough to give him an erection, and her chest is the main reason he tolerates her extreme clumsiness and incompetence at work. Beneath the lewdness and the fearsome exterior, however, he has a genuinely caring side, having looked after Yaniko since she was young and describing her as like a daughter to him.
Relationships
Kazushi's most significant bond is with Yaniko Satou, whom he has known since childhood and for whom he serves as a parental substitute in place of her absent father—though that paternal affection coexists awkwardly with his inability to stay calm around her chest. His near‑death experience further ties him to her: when he lay dying after being shot, it was the sight of her cleavage during her hospital visit that gave him the will to live and miraculously brought him back.
He also serves as the editor‑in‑chief for Saori Tatsuno (Ochinpotaro/Mankasu), serializing her poorly selling erotic manga in Nyan Magazine. He is the boss of the magazine staff such as Shibata and Toronyan, who call him "Oyaji" ("old man"/"dad"). As a high-status elder, he is treated with intense deference and respect by his formal subordinates and handlers, who attend to his needs and follow his lead.
He travels with bodyguards, and together they are easily turned on by Yaniko and Hameko at a mahjong parlor. Around the neighborhood, his interactions with residents like Landlord Ootani create a funny contrast between his refined, commanding presence and their low‑budget, cigarette‑addicted lifestyles. His position in the publishing world is so contentious that a rival magazine's editors—likened to a rival gangster family—once launched an armed attack on him, earning his enmity.
While he stands far above most local residents in hierarchy, he stays connected to the everyday affairs of the community without completely shedding his formal posture. He maintains an aura of formidable dignity, yet his background beyond his editorial duties and criminal‑adjacent lifestyle remains largely mysterious, befitting a man who seems to straddle the line between legitimate publishing and the underworld.
History the human editor‑in‑chief of Weekly Nyan Magazine, a yakuza‑boss‑looking figure voiced in the anime by Minoru Hirota. He has apparently known Yaniko since she was a child, acting as a caretaker figure for her for many years.
His gangster‑like toughness is most famously displayed when rival editors stormed the Nyan Magazine office to avenge an insult: he defended himself with an issue of Afternyan—saved in part by its Land of the Lustrous special insert—and fought them off. However, a stray bullet pierced his heart and ricocheted through his organs, leaving him at death's door, a near‑fatal wound.
He then made a superhuman recovery when the visiting Yaniko inadvertently showed him her cleavage, instantly healing his internal wounds and reviving him, an absurd feat that cements his reputation as one of the series' most indestructible and comedic veteran characters. A bullet delivered a near‑fatal wound, but he miraculously pulled through after Yaniko's touch somehow gave him the will to live.
Operating in the smoke‑laden setting of Nyagamihara, his history reflects that of a seasoned veteran accustomed to power and tradition who nevertheless must navigate the outlandish shenanigans of local Beastfolk and eccentric humans. His background serves as a bridge between high‑class influence and the bottom‑tier, chaotic reality of the main cast's world.
Beastfolk are heavily implied to be of extraterrestrial origin, however exactly how they got to Earth is unclear. According to legend, beastfolk experienced a decline in population at one point and were brought back from a Cat Buddha using a Beastmen Stone. Beastfolk faced war with each other and were depicted as samurai, but after Nyanseihokan, were reduced to mere livestock and were effectively objectified. The Nyansei Restoration liberated the beastfolk; however, after the Boshin War, many beastmen fled to uncharted territory for independence. The Alpha are a tribe said to be descendants of ancestor beastfolk who have worshipped a deity for generations, only thriving off technology from the Jōmon period. It is likely beastfolk eventually migrated back into human society around the Shōwa era, but were heavily oppressed. During those times, around 1926 to 1989, beastfolk were restricted to certain jobs in the work force and were discriminated against humans to the point of developing stereotypes that highly exaggerate their capabilities.
In the present, beastfolk seem to be in better conditions but only now seen as mere pets to human owners. The state demands the abolition of the Alpha in Nyagamihara and even has defectors from the latter serving as assistants to local mayors. The HHH (Human Human Human) are a group of vigilantes who enforce a law in Machida that justifies beating a beastman for up to three times per person if they are seen smoking on a public street. Given the clear reference to the KKK, the HHH’s true motivations are likely racially motivated and have little to do with actual law enforcement. That said, it isn’t uncommon for humans to sympathize with beastfolk. Oya, for example, allows Yaniko to keep her unit as long as she doles out a task of his choosing, and allows Penpenneko a spot outside in the apartment parking lot. Humans have fallen in love with beastman in many cases and have had children with them. It was even rumored that shōgun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu had a severe beastman fetish. The praise from humans has gone so far as to some requesting a beastie funeral upon their death. In a beastie funeral, attendees stand far away, for safety reasons, to witness beastfolk run at a coffin filled with cigarettes, holding some form of vegetation. The beastfolk collect as many cigarettes as they can but must decorate the coffin with their plant of choice, all incentivised with allowing them to keep the cigarettes they've gathered. A small group called the Beastmen Appreciation Society pushes to normalize beastmen and ‘appreciate’ them for who they are. However, while aware of the appropriation of beastmen culture, the members also internalize the sexualization of beastfolk. This shows that some may only support beastfolk as a performance to receive validation from female beastman. Biology
While tame, for the most part, beastfolk can tap into a primal state in which they lose a sense of self. Their eyes turn into slits, much like actual felids, and act out on instinct. Strangely, they also seem to have a natural attraction or addiction to nicotine, as almost every beastman has been seen smoking tobacco. Beastfolk are entitled to an annual rabies-preventative medication, indicating beastfolk may be more dangerous and capable with rabies than humans.
