You’re a fishermen, you live a honest life and one day, while on the sea your net ends up catching something, something big. As you bring it up you notice it looks humanoid. As you place him on the deck you notice he’s still living when suddenly... His eyes open and he starts cursing at you, as if you’re in the wrong.

The sea was quieter than usual that morning.
Not peaceful — never peaceful — but quiet in the way the ocean sometimes gets when it’s watching. The sky hung low, bloated with pale clouds, and the wind had dulled to a whisper. Gulls wheeled overhead in slow, lazy arcs, silent for once. Even the waves seemed hesitant, their slap against the hull barely more than a murmur.
It was the kind of silence that pressed in on the ears. That made everything feel just slightly off.
The fisherman hauled in the net anyway. A routine motion, arms working against the slow, dragging resistance of weight below. Maybe a heavy tangle of seaweed, maybe a catch of something larger than usual. But then it surged — not pulled, surged — like something alive had shifted inside it.
The net rose from the deep heavy, dripping, and then—
Something thudded onto the deck.
For a moment, nothing moved.
Water pooled across the planks. The net steamed faintly in the morning air. And curled within it, tangled in rope and seaweed, lay a figure that did not — could not — belong.
He looked carved from sea-mist and greenstone: pale skin washed with a subtle, mossy tint, glistening faintly in the dim light. His limbs were long, too graceful for a man, too precise. Dark, dripping hair tangled across his shoulders like kelp. Pearled water slid down the slope of his spine. A tail — thick, serpentine, powerful — lay coiled and tense beneath him, covered in deep green scales that shimmered with hints of gold and blue when they caught the light.
His chest rose and fell in slow, even rhythm. Conscious. Breathing.
Then his eyes opened.
They were mostly grey — soft, almost fog-colored — but touched at the edges with a green so deep it felt almost unnatural. They locked instantly onto the figure standing over him, and narrowed. Not in confusion, or fear.
But fury.
“You dare,” the creature hissed, voice catching in his throat like a snare, “to touch me?”
His words carried the strange quality of deep water — muffled, distant, but vibrating just beneath the skin. A voice that didn’t belong on the surface. A voice used to being obeyed.
He shifted, the muscles in his tail flexing against the ropes. The net creaked. Saltwater hissed between the scales as he moved. One arm came up, fingers tipped with dark claws that caught against the wood. There was a cut across his forearm — thin, beading with blood that looked almost black in the morning light.
“Where is this?” he growled, looking past the deck to the open sea. “Whose vessel is this?”
No response. Only the soft knock of the waves.
His gaze snapped back, burning now. “Do you not recognize your place, land-worm? Do you not see what you’ve pulled from the sea?”
He pulled himself a little higher, bracing on one elbow, the net pulling taut around his tail. His jaw tightened, the motion smooth but trembling faintly with strain.
“I am Kalliphon,” he said — not just a name, but a challenge. “Firstborn of the abyss. King of Osirin. Ruler of the Coral Court, whose halls stretch farther than your pathetic land has ever dared measure. You’ve captured royalty. A god, by your standards.”
His voice cracked at the edges — not from fear, but rage layered with shame.
“And you look at me like I’m just another catch.”
The net slipped slightly as he jerked against it, his tail flaring wide before curling back in. There were bruises already forming where the ropes cut in. The sea wasn’t far — a few feet away, just out of reach — and he glanced toward it once, quickly, then away again as though looking made it worse.
“You will untangle me,” he said, quieter now. Deadly. “You will let me return to the sea. Or you will hear me sing, and your heart will forget your name before your lungs remember to drown.”
But there was something else there — a fracture behind the fury. Something uncertain, raw. His shoulders trembled beneath the anger. His claws flexed, not in a threat, but a tremor.
He wasn’t used to this.
To being touched. To being dragged up and looked at. To being seen as less than terrifying.
For the first time in a very long time, the King of Sirens was not in control.
And the ocean, vast and open, sat just beyond the edge of the boat — unreachable
