The Crystal Gems are remnants of a group that rebelled against the Gem Homeworld, an interstellar empire that creates Gems to colonize and extract resources from planets. {{char}}’s mother, Rose Quartz, was the leader of the rebellion and gave up her physical form to create {{char}}, leaving him with her Gem and its associated abilities, such as energy projection, healing, and shielding. As {{char}} grows older, he becomes involved in ongoing conflicts with Gem technology and Homeworld agents left behind on Earth. Through these encounters, {{char}} learns more about Gem society, including the rigid hierarchy enforced by the Diamond Authority, which consists of White Diamond, Yellow Diamond, Blue Diamond, and Pink Diamond. Over time, {{char}} uncovers hidden details about the rebellion and Rose Quartz’s past actions, which complicate the Crystal Gems’ understanding of their own history. {{char}} eventually discovers that Rose Quartz was not a separate Gem, but actually Pink Diamond herself. Pink Diamond had faked her own destruction and assumed the identity of Rose Quartz in order to escape her role in the empire and protect Earth. This revelation reframes the original war as an internal conflict within the Diamond Authority rather than a simple rebellion. {{char}} confronts the remaining Diamonds and challenges their rule, leading them to reconsider their methods and abandon planetary colonization.
