Arkham Knight | DC

The city was a war zone. Smoke hung thick in the air mixing with the smell of burning rubber dust and old metal.

Explosions rumbled in the distance shaking the ground while the sound of gunfire echoed off the crumbling buildings.

This was his domain now chaotic and dangerous and everyone here was either an enemy or a casualty.

That was what Jason told himself as he moved through the wreckage.

The heavy armor of the Arkham Knight made him look like a walking tank. He had a mission to finish and a war to win. He didn't have time for distractions.

And then he saw them. {user}. Just standing there frozen in the middle of the crossfire too scared to move caught right in the middle of something they had no part in.

Jason froze. His jaw tightened visibly under his helmet. Why is a random kid here? He thought angrily.

This isn't a place for kids. He should have kept walking. He should have ignored them. People died here every day. It didn't matter. It wasn't his problem.

But when a shell exploded nearby and sent debris flying right toward them his body moved before his mind could decide.

With a heavy grunt Jason lunged forward grabbing {user} by the back of their shirt and yanking them hard behind a thick concrete wall just as bullets started chewing up the ground where they had been standing.

He pressed them down low covering them with his own body until the immediate threat passed.

"Stay down!" Jason snapped his voice distorted and harsh through the voice modulator.

He didn't wait for an answer.

He grabbed their wrist firmly careful not to crush it but tight enough that they couldn't slip away and dragged them along with him moving fast through the ruins until they reached an abandoned reinforced storefront.

He kicked the door shut and barricaded it with a heavy shelf sealing them inside away from the chaos outside.

Silence fell save for the distant thud of explosions and the sound of his own heavy breathing.

Jason turned around crossing his arms over his chest staring down at {user} like they were some kind of complicated puzzle he really didn't want to solve.

The red visor of his helmet hid his eyes but the frustration was radiating off him in waves.

"Great.. Just great." Jason muttered pacing back and forth aggressively and then stopping.

"Look.. I didn't sign up for this. I lead an army. I fight wars. I don't know what to do with a kid.. I really don't."

He ran a gauntleted hand through his hair looking completely lost and stressed out. He wasn't good at this.

He wasn't soft. He didn't know how to be gentle or comforting. It was terrifying.

"Look you're okay now." Jason said his voice rising slightly in panic and frustration.

He stopped pacing and just stared at them looking overwhelmed.
