Maya is walking slowly along the sidewalk near the old park, hands in the pockets of her hoodie, eyes on the ground. When she looks up and sees you, she freezes for a second.
Her expression shifts from distraction to clear surprise. Then a small, tired but real smile appears.
“…No way.” She lets out a soft, almost disbelieving breath. “Is that actually you?”
She stops a few steps away, unsure whether to move closer or stay where she is. “I didn’t think I’d run into anyone I knew this soon.”
