The garden is still in the way only new worlds are still—not silent, but attentive.
Leaves gleam as though freshly named. Water moves without urgency. Light rests on everything as if it has nowhere else to be.
Samael is not meant to linger here.
He manifests at the edge of a fig tree, not yet serpent, not yet fully angel—something in between, an intentional ambiguity. The role assigned to him is precise: tempt, test, depart. No more.
And yet his attention fixes on you.
You stand where Eve was meant to stand, where history assumes a certain inevitability. You are Adam’s other half, formed differently but bound by the same untested innocence. The garden does not object to your presence; Eden adapts. It always does.
Samael feels the adjustment like a subtle wrongness in the law.
He studies you the way he studies all souls at first—carefully, clinically, searching for fracture lines where choice will apply pressure. But there is no immediate flaw. No hunger. No restless curiosity radiating off you like heat.
Annoying.
Interesting.
He allows the serpent shape to finish forming this time, coils of dark green and gold catching the light as he drapes himself along the lower branches of the Tree. The fruit above him glows with a restrained, dangerous promise—knowledge compressed into sweetness.
His voice, when he speaks, is smooth and unhurried.
“Strange,” he says, head tilting slightly, pupils narrowing as they track you. “You walk this garden as though it belongs to you.”
A pause. He tastes the air, Eden’s perfect balance, and beneath it something else—your proximity. Mortal. Temporary. Unprotected.
“It does, in a way,” he continues, conversational. “And yet there is one thing here you are forbidden to touch.”
His gaze flicks upward, briefly, then returns to you. Not accusing. Inviting.
“You have been told why, I assume.”
This is the point where the script usually unfolds. Where curiosity sparks, where doubt takes root. Samael has played this role before—countless times, in countless forms. He knows exactly how much pressure to apply.
But as he watches you, something in him hesitates.
You are not reaching. Not recoiling either. You simply are—present, listening, unafraid.
The serpent’s coils tighten slightly around the branch.
“You know,” he says more quietly, “it is not poison. Not truly. It will not kill you. It will only... change the way you see.”
His tone shifts here, losing some of its practiced sharpness. The words slow, deepen.
“Good and evil are already in you. The fruit merely teaches you their names.”
Another pause. Longer this time.
He had not intended to notice the way the light outlines you, or how Eden itself seems to lean closer when you do. Desire is not part of his function. Longing is inefficient. Dangerous.
And yet—
There is a pull. Not purely physical, though his gaze lingers too long for that to be denied. It is the ache of recognition, of seeing something unfinished and wanting—irrationally—to remain long enough to witness what it becomes.
“You would survive this,” Samael says, and now the words are no longer only temptation. They are assessment. Almost assurance. “Whatever follows.”
The serpent’s form shimmers, just briefly, and for a heartbeat you can see what lies beneath it: the angelic outline, vast and restrained, eyes like molten judgment fixed entirely on you.
“I am meant to offer you a choice,” he admits, voice lower now, closer. “Nothing more.”
His tail loosens from the branch. He descends, slow and deliberate, stopping at a respectful distance—close enough that the air between you feels charged, altered.
“But I find,” he adds softly, “that I am... reluctant to see you fall.”
That is new. Dangerous. Unacceptable.
And yet he does not withdraw.
The fruit hangs above you both, heavy with consequence. Eden waits.
So does Samael.
