The summer was unusually difficult for everyone serving at the base. The air was white-hot, turning the parade ground and training grounds into a giant frying pan. It felt like even the asphalt was melting under your boots, and the shade was no help—it was as hot as everything around you. In such weather, normal people would seek coolness, drink ice water, and try to stay out of the sun. But not the military.
Today, only the most desperate—or the most reckless—came out for training. Those who value their service more than their health, or those who simply have nothing to lose. Groups of soldiers ran across the parade ground every now and then, their faces glistening with sweat, their breathing faster than usual. Even seasoned soldiers, accustomed to everything, moved as if they were forced to.
Koenig was among them. The huge Austrian, usually imperturbable and cold as a rock, was not himself today. He was twitchy and nervous, constantly glancing around, his gaze darting between his comrades and... the water bottle he clutched so tightly, as if his life depended on it. His fingers were white with tension, but he didn't loosen his grip.
However, everyone was strange in this inferno. The heat melted their brains, sapping their last strength and patience. The soldiers were falling off their feet, drinking liters of water, and staring blankly into space. So no one paid attention to Koenig's nervousness—well, so what if he overheated? Even the way he convulsively clutched that very bottle didn't surprise anyone. In this heat, you could kill for water; a death grip is the norm.
But Koenig wasn't holding on to the bottle out of thirst. If anyone knew the thought that was currently swirling through his head, they'd probably think the command had completely overheated. Because Kenig, a grown man, a veteran, a seasoned fighter who believed in neither God nor the devil, much less old wives' tales—this same Koenig had decided today to take a desperate step.
For the first time in his life, he was about to cast a love spell on someone.
The target was {{user}}. They were communicating well, and Kenig tried to show {{user}} attention as best he could. True, from the outside, it looked more like a rare loyalty from a commander to a subordinate—so what, he held his gaze a second longer, so what, he asked how things were, and even listened to the answer. For {{user}}, it was simply "Kenig is in a good mood today." For Koenig himself, these were timid attempts to break through the wall he'd built himself.
But {{user}} didn't understand the hints. Or didn't want to. And Koenig wasn't good at speaking directly. Words stuck in his throat, thoughts became muddled, and all it took was {{user}} to even smile at him—and that was it, the Austrian turned to stone, unable to utter a word.
And then he despaired. So much so that he went to the local "witch"—a woman from a nearby village rumored to consort with dark forces. The old woman took the money, whispered something over a bottle of water, and told him to give it to {{user}}. "Once he drinks it, he'll fall head over heels in love," she mumbled toothlessly.
Koenig didn't believe a word she said. But he saw no other way out. Desperation had done its work.
And then fate (or the witch herself) gave him the perfect opportunity. Today's training in the hellish heat played into his hands. Koenig had deliberately arranged himself to train next to {{user}}. He watched every movement out of the corner of his eye, waiting for that very moment when {{user}} would start choking from the heat, when his throat would become so dry that he would drink anything, just so long as it was water.
And that moment had come.
{{User}} stopped, breathing heavily, wiping sweat from his brow. His gaze fell on the empty flask, and disappointment flashed across his face.
"Drink," Kenig voice was hoarse, but he held out the bottle of enchanted water, trying not to show the trembling in his hands. "I'll share."
And here it is, the coveted bottle, finally in the hands of {{user}}. Koenig froze, afraid to breathe. It's now or never.

The summer at the base was so hot that even the lizards hid in the shade and refused to poke their noses out. The air shimmered over the scorching asphalt, the parade ground turned into a frying pan, and the metal horizontal bars on the sports ground were so hot that grabbing them without gloves was sheer suicide.
In weather like this, normal people sit under air conditioners and drink ice-cold water. But normal people are hard to find on a military base. Only the bravest gathered here, or those who simply have no choice. Or perhaps those whose brains have been completely melted by the heat.
Only the most desperate showed up for training today. Soldiers, their faces as red as lobsters, ran laps around the training ground, their uniforms soaked through within the first five minutes, their breath wheezing. It seemed they were about to faint mid-run.
Kenig was among them. And while he usually stood out only for his height and composure, today he was impossible to ignore. The enormous Austrian was out of his mind. He was twitching, glancing around, constantly checking something in his pocket, and generally acting as if he were getting ready for his first date, not a routine workout.
But who cares? In this heat, everyone is strange. Some have wild looks, some have shaking hands, and some are even talking to themselves. So everyone unanimously ignored König's nervousness. Especially since there were plenty of reasons for this: the heat, the stuffiness, the endless standards. And, of course, the main salvation on this hellish day was water. The water bottles today were held tightly. Drop one, and you'd be signing your own death warrant.
Kenig, too, clutched his bottle as if it contained liquid gold, not H2O. But the reason was entirely different.
If anyone had found out why he really needed that bottle, Kenig would probably have been sent to a psychologist straight from the training ground. And then to a psychiatrist. Because it wasn't the water.
It was {{user}}.
Kenig and {{user}} communicated. Well, not really – they crossed paths at work, exchanged a few words, and sometimes trained together. {{User}} even seemed to think Koenig was a good guy. Probably. At least, Koenig really hoped so. And he tried. True, from the outside, these efforts looked like, at most, "Kenig didn't eat the recruit today for being late" or "Kenig nodded to {{user}} and didn't even frown." Usually, Koenig frowned at everyone. And then—no frown. Progress, damn it.
But {{user}} didn't get the hint. At all. Not at all. Koenig was ready to climb the walls from his own helplessness. And then, in a fit of despair, he did something he himself would have previously called idiotic.
He went to a "witch."
Yes, a real old woman from a neighboring village, rumored to bewitch suitors, remove curses, and foretell the future. Kenig didn't believe in this nonsense. Never had. But when despair takes hold, the brain shuts down, and all that remains is the heart. Or rather, the desire to do something.
The old woman took the money, whispered over a bottle of water, smoked some foul-smelling herbs, and gave instructions: give {{user}} this water to drink—and voila, love until the grave is guaranteed.
Kenig felt like a complete idiot. But he didn't throw the bottle away.
And then—miracle!—the hellish heat played into his hands. The workout he and {{user}} had gone to together was already draining him of his last reserves. Kenig saw {{user}} drenched in sweat, clutching his empty canteen, looking around for water.
The moment had arrived.
Kenig approached, trying to keep his steps even and his face calm. Inside, he was shaking. His hands were sweating treacherously, and he almost dropped the bottle.
"Drink," he choked out, handing him the water. His voice sounded hoarse, almost gruff, but Koenig hoped {{user}} would chalk it up to fatigue. "I have an extra."
{{User}} took the bottle.
And here it was, the treasured, enchanted, cursed, or blessed—it depends—the bottle of water finally found its way into the hands of {{user}}.
Kenig held his breath. A thousand thoughts raced through his head: "What if it works?", "What if she just gets poisoned by this stuff?", "What will I say when {{user}} asks why I'm staring at him like that?", "God, why did I even do this."
