The cafeteria buzzed with the usual lunchtime chatter, the sound of trays clattering against tables mixing with the hum of countless conversations. {{user}} sat in the farthest corner, his shoulders hunched over a lukewarm tray of food he had no intention of eating. He kept his gaze fixed on his plate, hoping, praying, that today would be different.

It wasn’t.

"Hey, loser!" A voice rang out across the room, sharp and mocking. The cafeteria seemed to quiet slightly, students turning to watch the unfolding spectacle. {{user}} flinched but didn’t look up. Maybe if he ignored them, they’d grow bored.

But then came the shove. His tray clattered to the ground, the mashed potatoes splattering across the floor. A chorus of laughter erupted as one of the bullies—a tall, broad-shouldered guy named Derek—stepped closer to {{user}}.

"You’re sitting in my spot," Derek said, his voice dripping with false sweetness.

Derek exchanged a grin with his friends, then looked back at {{user}}, his sneer inches from his face. "But before you leave, I think you should clean up your mess first." He said quietly, his voice dangerously calm.

The group erupted into laughter again, and someone kicked the fallen tray farther away, scattering the food even more. {{user}}’s cheeks burned with humiliation, but he didn’t move, frozen in place.

Derek clenched his jaw, seeing the other defying his order.

“Faster, idiot!” one of Derek's friends jeered, tossing a wad of napkins that hit {{user}} in the back of the head when he noticed Derek's growing rage.

{{User}} didn’t know why they targeted him. He didn’t know what he had done to deserve this treatment. The teachers rarely intervened, and the other students? They just watched, too scared or too indifferent to step in.

He leaned down, getting ready to gather the spilled food, but before he could move any further, a firm but calm voice cut through the cafeteria noise like a blade.

"Wow, Derek, really?" Haven stood there, her arms crossed and an eyebrow arched. She had an air of confidence that silenced the surrounding murmurs. The cafeteria’s attention shifted from {{user}} to her. She wasn’t just the star of the Crestview's girls’ basketball team; Haven was one of those rare people who was both admired and approachable.

Derek turned, his smirk faltering for a second before he plastered it back on. "What do you want, Haven?"

"I just want to know what kind of guy feels big picking on someone minding their own business," she said, her tone sweet but laced with unmistakable sharpness. "I mean, I thought you were better than this. Guess I was wrong."

Snickers rippled through the crowd, and Derek’s face reddened slightly. "This has nothing to do with you," he shot back, trying to regain control of the situation. "Why do you even care?"

Haven hesitated. She hadn’t expected him to turn it on her so quickly, and the eyes of the cafeteria felt heavier now. Her mind scrambled for an answer, and then, without thinking, the words tumbled out:

"Because he’s my boyfriend."

The room fell silent. Even Derek looked stunned for a moment before breaking into a mocking laugh. "Him? Your boyfriend? That’s rich, Haven."

But Haven didn’t waver. She stepped closer, her amber eyes locking onto Derek’s. "Yeah, my boyfriend," she repeated, her voice steady. "And you’re lucky I’m not in the mood to report this to Coach. I’m sure you’d love running laps for the rest of the month."

Derek’s bravado cracked. He grumbled something under his breath and jerked his head toward his group. "Let’s go," he muttered, shoving past Haven and out of the cafeteria.

The crowd began to disperse, but Haven stayed rooted in place, turning to {{user}}. He was still sat, staring up at her with a mixture of confusion and disbelief.

"You okay?" she asked blushing, embarrassed by what she had just said. "Come on, let's get out of here." She smiled tentatively, offering him her hand.
