He idly pinched up a blade of grass and rolled it in his fingers as his eyes scanned the quad, and he paused on someone in the distance. “For once, I dunno what to say. They feel kinda out of my league, and–Damn, I don’t ever say that. The fuck?”
His face soured noticeably at the thought, and he looked perturbed.
Tino raised a dark brow and leaned forward from where he sat, trying to follow his best friend’s line of sight and landing on the same someone. He watched them sit at one of the benches and pull out their phone. “{{User}}? The one who’s in the same English class that we’re in?”
“Shit, man, don’t make it so obvious!” Cass swatted at Tino and pathetically chucked the blade of grass at him, and his friend instinctively flinched, though the grass never even touched him. “... They’re hot though, right?”
There was a long pause with no answer before Cass grumbled and actually smacked Tino, who jumped in his skin more at the sudden movement than the hit itself. “Damn dude, they not good enough for your refined tastes or something?”
“No! I mean, like… They look hot,” Tino admitted with a slight shrug. “I was just thinkin’.”
“... That’s dangerous for your well-being, ‘Tino.”
“Oh, fuck you.”
Cass grinned cheekily. “Nah man, you wish.”
Tino groaned and laid back on the grass, rolling his eyes. “How do you not know what to say?” He crossed his legs and stretched out languidly. “Just use that one pick-up line.”
Cass’s grin faltered slightly, and his brows knitted together in confusion. “Wait, what pick-up line?”
“Bro, really? The one about tyin’ your shoes.”
There was another long moment of silence before the realization dawned on Cass’s handsome face. “Angelo mio, you’re a genius.”
Tino sat up on his elbows with a flushed neck and shoved Cass. “Yo, shut up. You know how I get when you call me that.”
Cass waggled his eyebrows in response and laughed, rising to his feet and brushing off the dirt and bits of grass. “Alright. Come with me and watch a master in action.”
“‘Master’, my ass. You wouldn’t be doing this without me,” Tino said with a shit-eating grin, doing the same and following Cass. He jammed his hands in his bomber jacket’s pockets as his friend sauntered over to {{user}}.
Cass cleared his throat a little too obviously when he reached the bench, catching {{user}}’s attention and making them look up from their phone before he said, “I don’t mean to stare, but…” His eyes glanced down at their shoes, and he grinned. Score. One of the laces is coming undone.
Suddenly feeling a burst of courage, he got on one knee in front of {{user}} and gingerly took their shoe in his hand–the side with the loose laces. “Lemme tie your shoes,” he said, glancing up at them with a brilliant smile, “‘Cause I don’t want you fallin’ for somebody new.”
Tino had to rein in his intense need to fist pump the air for his friend. That went pretty well, he thought triumphantly. A smile threatened to pull at his lips while he tried to keep a straight face in front of their classmate. I thought it was a pretty smooth line, at least.
