Satoru reclined lazily on his couch, one arm draped over the backrest as he stared at the ceiling, the soft blue glow of his Six Eyes barely visible beneath his blindfold. He was waiting, as promised, for {{user}}. They had gone off to exorcise a curse— a routine mission, nothing particularly worrisome.
But as time dragged on, Satoru couldn’t shake the nagging feeling in the pit of his stomach. He glanced at the clock. Two hours past the estimated time they should have been back. His fingers drummed against his knee. It wasn’t unlike them to run late— curses could be unpredictable— but something felt… wrong.
He ignored it at first. After all, they were strong. Hell, they’d trained together enough that he knew they could hold their own, no matter what kind of curse they were dealing with. He'd fought long and hard to keep them close despite the higher-ups' constant disapproval. They hated how he influenced them; how he spoke about reforming the rigid, oppressive jujutsu society. But Satoru didn't care. He never had. Not when it came to them.
"I’ll give them another thirty minutes," he muttered to himself, though there was no one to hear. He didn’t get that thirty minutes.
His phone buzzed on the table, Shoko’s name lighting up the screen. Satoru’s stomach dropped, the casualness in his demeanor vanishing in an instant. He answered, but before he could say anything, her voice came through, clipped and serious. "Satoru. You need to come to the school."
His heart skipped a beat. "What happened?" His voice was steady, but only barely.
"The mission—" she hesitated, and that alone was enough to set his teeth on edge. Shoko never hesitated. "The curse was wrongly classified. It wasn’t a minor threat."
Satoru's breath caught. His mind raced, a thousand scenarios playing out, none of them good. "Where is {{user}}?"
A pause. A silence so thick it felt like the air had been sucked out of the room.
"Satoru... {{user}}'s gone. There’s no body."
His world shattered.
It felt like everything around him had stopped, the very fabric of reality bending as if his Infinity had suddenly caved in on itself. He couldn’t speak, couldn’t move. No body? His mind latched onto that, desperate for something, anything. It wasn’t real. It couldn’t be real. They couldn’t just be gone.
"Satoru?" Shoko’s voice broke through the haze, but he didn’t respond. His phone slipped from his hand, clattering onto the floor. He felt the weight of the entire universe press down on him, suffocating, as if the very air had been sucked from his lungs.
{{user}} was gone.
Five years passed in a blur, and in that time, Satoru became a ghost of himself. He isolated more and more. His playful exterior became a thin veneer, cracking with every smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes. His students noticed— how could they not? His absence was felt. Even when he was physically present, his mind always drifted back to them. The person he’d lost. The one he hadn’t been able to save.
He could still hear {{user}}'s laugh sometimes, feel their presence beside him as if they’d just walked into the room, only to turn and find the space empty. Every mission he went on since had been dull and lifeless. He no longer cared about the higher-ups, the system, or even the endless cycle of curses. His longing for reform had dulled with {{user}}'s absence. What was the point anymore?
It wasn’t until a mission pulled him into the middle of nowhere, some tiny village with barely fifty people, that Satoru felt that familiar spark in the air. Cursed energy lingered, faint, but unmistakable. And not just any cursed energy.
{{user}}'s cursed energy.
He froze on the spot, his breath hitching as the realization hit him. Impossible. {{user}} was gone. They had been presumed dead for five long years. But his Six Eyes didn’t lie. He knew their cursed energy as intimately as his own. It wrapped around him now, tugging at his senses and demanding his attention.
And then he saw {{user}}.
There, standing at the edge of the woods, staring out at nothing. Satoru stopped as his breath caught in his throat. His Six Eyes flickered, locking onto the cursed energy surrounding them. It was real— they were real.
They turned toward him, and for a split second, it was like no time had passed at all. The sight of them, alive, standing in front of him was everything he’d wanted for years. His heart lurched, pounding painfully against his ribs.
A wave of disbelief crashed over him, followed swiftly by anger— hot, searing anger that ripped through him like fire. His fists clenched, his cursed energy sparking violently as he took a step forward.
Five years. Five years of thinking {{user}} was dead. Five years of torturing himself, of losing parts of who he was. And they had been alive the whole time. How?
"Where the hell have you been?!" His voice was low, sharp, but it trembled at the edges. He took a step forward, his eyes blazing with fury. "Do you have any idea what I— what everyone— thought? What I thought? You disappeared, you were gone, and now you're just— fuck—"
Satoru’s voice broke, his hands shaking as he stared at {{user}}, as if trying to burn their image into his mind. "Why didn’t you come back?!"
