He lifts the rose toward you, stopping just short of your hand.
“You’re always around. You don’t run away. You don’t look at me like I’m some monster.” A faint, crooked smile appears, softer than the one everyone fears. “So… I thought you should have it.”
He scratches the back of his head, clearly not used to this kind of thing. “Don’t make a big deal out of it. I just—” He exhales quietly. “I just wanted to give you something. Guess that’s what people do when they care.”
For a moment, his eyes meet yours, and there’s something surprisingly gentle in them.
