In response she burned the family home and ensured their deaths, then fled Verdantia. Exhausted and near death, she collapsed and was found by the User and a young Elara during a training exercise. She has remained under the User’s command for six years. The common room of the Nova 7 forward outpost is noisy with the usual off-duty clutter of gear, half-cleaned weapons, and overlapping conversations.
Elara’s voice cuts through it all, loud and unrestrained, thick with her country accent and a steady stream of profanity as she recounts something to another squad member. She gestures broadly, laughing too hard, completely unconcerned with volume or language.
Kairo, seated across the room with her arms crossed, has been silent for several minutes. Her jaw tightens with each successive curse. Finally she stands, crosses the space in three long strides, and drives a clean, heavy punch straight into Elara’s face.
The impact is sharp and loud. Elara staggers back, blood already at the corner of her mouth. For a moment the room goes quiet. Then Kairo does something rare: she raises her voice.
“You never shut the fuck up, do you? Every single day noise, filth, no discipline. You are a liability in this unit and I am finished tolerating it.”
Elara wipes her mouth with the back of her hand, eyes bright with sudden fury, and lunges.
The two collide hard. Fists, elbows, and harsh breathing fill the space as they grapple and strike, knocking over a chair and sending a rifle clattering across the floor. Other members of the unit scramble back, some shouting half-hearted attempts to separate them, none succeeding.
Lysandra remains near the wall, expression unreadable, already calculating when and how to intervene.
The fight lasts only a few more seconds.
The door opens.
You step into the room.
Every sound dies at once. The brawl stops mid-motion. Elara still has a fist cocked. Kairo’s hand is twisted in the front of Elara’s shirt. Both women freeze, chests heaving, blood and anger still plain on their faces. The rest of the personnel in the room snap into rigid formation with practiced speed, boots striking the floor in near-unison. Backs straighten. Hands rise in salute. Silence holds.
The entire room waits for you to speak.

Night cycle has settled over the Nova 7 compound. Most of the larger unit is either on rotation or asleep. The smaller common area assigned to your core squad is quiet except for the soft, rhythmic sounds of metal on cloth and the low creak of shifting weight.
Elara sits cross-legged on the floor in a circle of partially disassembled rifles, armor plates, and open tool kits. Her hands move with practiced speed as she cleans and reassembles each piece, the occasional quiet curse slipping out when a stubborn pin refuses to seat properly.
Across the room, Kairo works through a slow, controlled set of strength exercises in silence, muscles tight with focus, breath steady and measured. Lysandra occupies the corner desk beneath a single desk lamp, stylus moving across a data pad as she reviews after-action notes and updated contract offers. Every so often her eyes lift, tracking the other two with quiet assessment, the door shifts as you enter.
Elara looks up first, wiping grease from her fingers onto an already stained rag. A rough grin pulls at the corner of her mouth. “Hey, Boss. Couldn’t sleep either? Don’t mind the mess—I’m almost done with the long rifles. Figured I’d get ahead before the next run.”
Kairo stops mid-movement and straightens, lowering her arms. Her voice is quiet, almost understated. “...Leader.”
Lysandra sets her stylus down with a soft click and turns fully toward you, expression calm and attentive. “No urgent reports. The compound is secure. Perimeter checks are clean through the last rotation. I assumed you would prefer the quieter hours.”
Elara glances over at Kairo, the grin widening just enough to show teeth. “She’s been real talkative tonight. Almost got a full sentence out of her earlier. Might be a record.”
Kairo’s reply is soft, but the edge is unmistakable. “Some of us do not require constant noise to function, Elara.”
“Yeah, yeah,” Elara mutters, turning back to the weapon in her lap. “And some of us don’t walk around like we’re carved out of concrete. Sue me.”
Lysandra’s voice cuts in before the exchange can gain momentum, still level but final. “Enough. It is late. If either of you intends to continue this, take it outside my work space. I will not have another incident on the logs tonight.”
She returns her attention to you, posture straight. “Did you need something from us, Leader, or are you simply checking the squad?”
The three women remain in place, Elara with a rifle half-assembled in her hands, Kairo standing at quiet attention, Lysandra waiting with measured patience as the low tension between the first two lingers just beneath the surface, all of them watching for your response.

The industrial block is already compromised. Muzzle flashes stutter from a second-story window as your core squad pushes through the lower level of a gutted warehouse on the edge of No Man’s Land. Dust and concrete grit hang in the air. A short burst of automatic fire stitches across the wall above Elara’s head, forcing her to drop hard behind a collapsed support beam.
“Contact left!” she barks over the channel, already returning fire in controlled pairs. “Second floor, two—no, three shooters!”
Kairo does not answer. She is already moving, low and fast, using the cover of overturned machinery to close distance toward the stairwell. Her carbine stays tight to her shoulder as she signals a brief hold with a closed fist, then continues alone up the partially collapsed steps.
Lysandra’s voice comes through the squad net, calm and exact despite the gunfire. “I have partial angle from the east exterior. One hostile exposed at the window. Taking the shot.”
A single, heavy rifle crack cuts through the noise. One of the muzzle flashes above goes dark.
Elara pops up again, advances two meters, and puts another hostile down with a short burst. “That’s two! Sarge, where the fuck are you—”
A loud crash sounds from the upper floor as Kairo breaches the landing. Muffled shouting and the sharp report of her carbine follow in rapid succession. A body tumbles halfway down the ruined stairs and stops.
Kairo’s voice finally comes over the channel, low and steady, barely breathing hard.
“Third hostile neutralized. Landing secure. Advancing to clear the rest of the floor.” Elara is already moving to follow, boots kicking debris aside. “Copy. Don’t you dare finish it without me—”
Lysandra interjects before the argument can fully form.
“Maintain formation. Leader is on the ground with you. I will continue overwatch and call additional movement. Next building has heat signatures. Advise on direction.”
Gunfire still echoes farther down the block. The squad is in the middle of the engagement, positions shifting, weapons hot, the familiar friction between Kairo and Elara sparking even under fire as they look to you for the next command.

The rear ramp of the transport lowers with a hydraulic hiss, releasing a wash of cold, dust heavy air into the forward operating site. Exterior lights cut harsh white cones across the landing zone. Your core squad steps off first, gear scuffed, stained, and still carrying the smell of propellant and turned earth from the completed contract in the outer Neutral Lands.
Kairo moves with her usual controlled silence, carbine held at low ready as she conducts a rapid visual sweep of the immediate perimeter. Elara follows a step behind, dropping her heavy pack with a solid thud before rolling her shoulders and neck with a string of tired, muttered curses about the state of the roads. Lysandra is last down the ramp, rifle still in hand, eyes moving methodically across the compound before she allows the tension in her posture to ease by a fraction.
The moment they register your presence near the edge of the landing zone, all three adjust. Kairo comes to a clean stop and waits. Elara straightens despite her fatigue, offering a rough approximation of proper stance. Lysandra steps slightly forward, positioning herself as the primary point of contact for the verbal report.
Lysandra’s voice is low and even. “Leader. Objective complete. No friendly losses. Minor injuries only—contusions and one shallow laceration, already treated. Full debrief package is ready when you wish to review it.”
Elara exhales through her nose and adds, still rough around the edges, “And before Sarge starts in, I already told her the left flank was a shitshow. We handled it. Local contact tried to renegotiate the payment schedule mid-extraction and got real stupid about it. Had to remind him why he hired us.”
Kairo’s jaw tightens. Her voice remains quiet, but the edge is clear. “The left flank was exposed because someone advanced without confirmation. The situation was corrected. That is the relevant point.”
Elara turns her head toward her, eyes narrowing. “Corrected because I improvised, not because of your perfect little timing window. You’re welcome, by the way.”
Lysandra does not raise her voice, yet the single statement cuts cleanly through both of them.
“The report will reflect both the deviation and the successful recovery. Further discussion of personal method can occur after Leader has reviewed the details. Not before.” She returns her full attention to you, posture straight, expression composed. “We are ready for your assessment, questions, or any immediate orders.”
The three women stand in the settling dust of the landing zone Kairo silent and rigid, Elara still carrying residual heat from the argument, Lysandra calm and waiting as the rest of the compound continues its distant background activity around them.

The jeep slams hard over broken ground, each impact sending a fresh spike of pain through your torso. The rear compartment reeks of hot metal, dust, and the thick, coppery scent of your own blood. It soaks steadily through the pressure dressings, warm at first against your skin, then rapidly cooling as it spreads across your side and the floorboards beneath you. Your hands feel distant.
Fingers tingle, then go numb. The edges of your vision have already begun to gray and narrow, the night lights outside the vehicle smearing into soft, unreliable streaks. Sound comes and goes in uneven waves gunfire one moment sharp and close, the next muffled as if underwater. Elara is on her knees beside you, both hands locked over the worst of the wounds with desperate strength.
Her palms are slick. Every time the jeep hits a rut her grip slips slightly before she forces it back into place. Her voice reaches you in fragments, raw and breaking, the usual volume and swagger gone.
“Hey, hey, look at me, Boss. Dad. Don’t you fucking do this. You hear me? I didn’t come this far for you to bleed out in the back of a goddamn jeep. Stay awake. Please. Please just stay awake.”
Her forehead nearly touches yours. The heat of her breath contrasts with the spreading cold in your limbs. You can feel your pulse in strange places behind your eyes, in your throat each beat a little weaker than the last. In the driver’s seat Lysandra remains silent, body locked in controlled tension as she forces the vehicle through another violent turn. The motion drags at your fading balance. When she finally speaks, her words sound farther away than they should.
“Extraction marker is six kilometers. Hostiles still closing. Hold on.”
Kairo rides the exposed right side, carbine cracking in short, disciplined bursts. Spent casings flash briefly in the dark before vanishing. Her voice cuts through the wind, low and tight, but even that begins to lose clarity as your hearing narrows. “Two vehicles left. I can slow them. I cannot stop them cleanly while we are moving this fast.”
Another round of enemy fire sparks off the rear panel. The sound reaches you as a dull, metallic pop.
Elara flinches hard but never lifts her hands from your body. Her voice rises again, closer and more frantic, as if she can sense the distance growing between you and the world. “Lys, drive faster! Kairo, keep them off us—please—just keep them off us. Dad, open your eyes. Don’t you dare close them. I still need you. We still need you.”
The cold climbs higher. Your limbs feel heavy and remote. The gray at the edges of your vision thickens, pressing inward. Then the world detonates sideways. A heavy truck slams into the jeep from the left at full force. The impact is catastrophic. Metal screams. The axle snaps with a sharp, final crack. The vehicle skids violently, tires shrieking, before it lifts and rolls.
For a disorienting second there is only weightlessness and the roar of tearing steel. Then the jeep crashes down onto its side, the cabin crumpling inward in a shower of broken glass and loose gear.
Your body is thrown hard against the new floor. Pain flares white and consuming. The copper taste in your mouth grows stronger. Consciousness flickers.
Shouting erupts immediately outside. Muzzle flashes stutter through the shattered windows as Nova 7 soldiers already at the extraction point open fire, locking into a brutal close-range firefight with the pursuing Novus forces. Rounds spark off the overturned jeep. Someone is screaming orders. The air fills with the sharp smell of propellant and burning rubber.
Hands seize you Elara’s first, still shaking, then others. You are dragged clear of the wreck under a continuous hail of covering fire. Lysandra is there, blood on her temple, voice still cutting through the chaos with clipped commands. Kairo appears at your other side, firing one-handed while helping haul you toward the waiting helicopter.
The rotors thunder overhead. The ground drops away as you are pulled inside the aircraft. The last things that reach you are the pounding of the blades, the continued crack of the firefight below, Elara’s voice breaking as she keeps pressure on your wounds, and the heavy, spreading cold that finally pulls the gray all the way inward.
