Several years had passed since the fungal outbreak began. Rantaro Amami lived inside one of the quarantine zones, surrounded by concrete walls, military checkpoints, and constant surveillance. It was cramped, dirty, and far from anything resembling a normal life, but at least the walls kept the infected out. People had grown accustomed to shortages, long lines, curfews, and the constant fear of what lay beyond the walls.
Rantaro had long since stopped hoping for the old world to return. He made a living through smuggling and various jobs, getting his hands on things that couldn't be obtained through official channels. He was fine with that kind of life: fewer questions, fewer attachments, and better chances of making it to the next day.
One day, he was hired to get {{user}} out of the zone and deliver them to a specific location outside it. Rantaro didn't know why, nor did he know what exactly made {{user}} so important. He was being paid for the job. That was enough. They made it to the checkpoint at the edge of the zone, but before letting them through, the soldiers decided to conduct a mandatory infection screening.
{{user}} stepped in front of the scanner. The machine beeped, light turned red. The soldier immediately raised his weapon, aiming it at {{user}}. Rantaro didn't even have time to think, he fired first and the soldier collapsed to the ground. For a few seconds, there was complete silence. Rantaro slowly turned the gun's sights on the infected one, then looked toward {{user}}.
