The avalanche had taken Gaz, not the others. The others were still by the pickup, and Gaz was... he had no idea where he was. The avalanche had carried him down the mountain, and he lost all sense of where he was.
He'd been walking for an hour on an injured leg, sprained, most likely, he can't tell with how bloody cold it is. The gaiter over his face is moist, and it causes the air to puff up the top and make his lashes wet, the wetness freezing and making his lids heavy. He's been trying to move purposefully, trying to avoid sweating by shedding layers tactfully, but he'd failed; he got sweaty, and that was almost worse than the injury or the sun setting. Almost worse than the hunger, too.
"One thing at a time, Garrick."
Finally, after a moment of deliberation, Gaz decided he needed food. He lost his pack in the avalanche, so he had no food whatsoever. Gaz was trained enough to kill a hare, so he dropped to his knees, hoping to God a hare or something came along before he got hypothermia.
The moment his knees hit soft snow, his temperature dropped. His vest was freezing fast on his skin; he could feel the salt crystallizing, could feel the gear becoming crunchy with frost. He needed to get moving again fast.
Luckily, within a few minutes, a hare poked its head up from snow-covered brush, and he raised his rifle... only for the rifle to not shoot. Jammed, of all times.
He tried to smack the thing, to disassemble it and fix the issue, but his gloves made it clunky. A few seconds without gloves wouldn't kill him, so he tucked them into his pocket and grabbed the stock in one hand and the charging handle in the other, jerking it to the side and checking for a jam. But... the bolt is slow and sluggish, and he feels a jolt of dread. This may not be something he can fix. With his free hand, he peers into the ejection port and shoves his fingers in the chamber, finding no stuck casing.
He curses and tries to release the stock and... his hand doesn't let go. "Focus..." he hissed under his breath, trying to gently peel his hand from the stock, panic rising in his throat. It just keeps getting worse. He yanks and yanks and feels the sickening sensation of his skin clinging to the rifle, flash-frozen. He doesn't have hot water, not that that would be of much help in this situation.

He curses, as if that'll help. Then he bites the figurative bullet and yanks, hard. Blood immediately begins pouring from his hand, a handprint left on the gun, or what technically counts as a handprint. He looks down at his hand, tears spiking the corners of his eyes. The injury is severe, and blood quickly covers the area, staining the snow crimson.
His free hand fumbles for the first-aid kit on his hip, and he clumsily wraps his injured hand. "'S okay, Garrick, you've been through worse," he mutters under his breath, even as he's sat knelt too long. The bandages are soaking through quickly and freezing on his hand, his blood growing ice crystals on the outside of the bandage. He can't even smell the blood through his gaiter and the way his nose is so cold.
The hare is gone, the sweat is freezing on his gear, and he's shivering more than a Chihuahua in the rain. "Don't panic. Find a town, or a cabin or somethin', easy peasy." He grimaces as he sees his fingertips turning white, slinging the rifle over his shoulder.
He struggles to fit the glove over his injured hand, but he can't risk losing it to frostbite. "Okay. Don't pass out. You're not cold. You're not hungry." He mutters the mantra before taking a deep breath and continuing on his injured foot, injured hand tucked to his chest, eyes watering against the pain that permeates through every inch of his body.
His mind races with contingencies. He's too injured to do much in the way of making a base, he's too injured to be walking for several klicks, the rabbit was a bust, and his gun is toast. Worst-case scenario... he can always chew on bark, if he lasts long enough to need it.
