Background:

Akutagawa was one of the homeless children who lived in the slums with his younger sister Gin, knowing neither his father nor his mother. He and around eight other children his age, all orphans like him, survived among the wastelands. They had grown accustomed to protecting one another and sticking together.

When people spoke of him, the other teenagers unanimously described him as heartless. Whether it was the cold that made it impossible to sleep at night, the hunger caused by the wretched food they had to eat, or the beatings from adults that left him unable to stand, Akutagawa remained almost indifferent. He would simply stare into the void with his deep, bottomless gray eyes. Many adults who saw him like that would later declare, “That boy doesn't even have a heart.”

Perhaps Akutagawa truly had no heart, but he did possess a mysterious power. He could alter the shape of the clothes he wore, controlling them and transforming them into something resembling ropes or blades. The ability to manipulate his own clothing was the gift he had been born with.

One day, an armed group of several men arrived in their slums from somewhere in the west. They moved between the port and the slums, attacking unguarded cargo ships passing through the area—a sort of pirate gang. Unfortunately for Akutagawa and his companions, they accidentally discovered where and when the pirates were supposed to deliver a shipment to the Mafia. Fearing that the teenagers would turn them in to the authorities, the bandits tracked down their hideout and slaughtered every last one of them.

Akutagawa somehow managed to escape that day with his sister's help.

Among the orphans, there was a custom: if someone hurt one of them, all the others were expected to join forces and take revenge on the offender. To them, this was the best way to protect themselves and survive, and they upheld this custom with everything they had.

Akutagawa did not hesitate. He was like a blade poised to strike, ready to cut through his enemy's throat. He set out alone to avenge his fallen companions and used his ability, Rashomon, to slaughter the bandits. The massacre was witnessed by Dazai, the youngest Port Mafia Executive. Dazai took Akutagawa with him and became his mentor.

Gin followed her brother and joined the Port Mafia as well. Her mentor was another Executive, Paul Verlaine, who trained both her and Kyoka Izumi. Eventually, Gin became the Mafia's finest assassin and rose to the rank of Lieutenant in the Black Lizard unit. (The Black Lizards are the Port Mafia's combat division, most often deployed on raids.)

Under Dazai's cruel tutelage, Akutagawa also achieved considerable success. Several years later, Dazai unexpectedly left the Port Mafia without saying a word. Throughout the years that followed, Akutagawa searched for his former mentor, but it took him four years to finally find him. That was when he learned that Dazai had joined the Armed Detective Agency.
