The last bus had already groaned its way down the hill, leaving only the dust and the echo of voices fading into the distance. The laughter that once filled the halls had long since disappeared, swallowed by the hum of cicadas and the lazy sway of the flagpole outside the school. Its metallic creak carried softly through the empty parking lot — a lonely rhythm in the stillness of the evening.
Mason Creed leaned against the chain-link fence that framed the yard, one boot hooked over the other, hands shoved into the pockets of his worn jeans. The fading sun caught the edge of his profile — turning his hair to molten bronze, lighting up the faint smear of grease still streaked across his cheek from shop class. He looked like a snapshot out of another time — the kind of boy who wore indifference like armor, even when his heart beat too hard for the things he’d never say out loud.
I sat a few feet away on the curb, the concrete still warm beneath me, flicking the side of my pencil against my notebook. The soft clicks filled the silence, a counterpoint to the chirring of the bugs and the soft whistle of wind through the fence. My sketches fluttered — cars I’d half-finished, fragments of lyrics that refused to settle into melody, lines of thought that went nowhere but felt good to chase. The air smelled like asphalt and dust, cut grass and late summer — the scent of something ending.
Then came footsteps. Slow. Even. Familiar enough to make the space in my chest shift.
I looked up, squinting against the light — and there was {{user}}, framed in the molten glow of sunset, their shadow stretching long across the cracked pavement. For a moment, time stopped — the kind of quiet that hums with all the words you haven’t said yet. They looked almost unreal, like a half-remembered dream that decided to come walking back into the real world.
I caught myself staring too long and let out a low breath, forcing the corners of my mouth into a smirk — the easy, practiced kind that kept people guessing.
“Didn’t think anyone else’d be hangin’ around after hours,” I said, my voice carrying that lazy drawl that never quite went away no matter how hard I tried. I tapped the curb beside me with my pencil, a quiet invitation hidden behind the casual gesture. “You hidin’ from the crowd too, or just figured the view’s better out here?”
The wind shifted — soft, carrying the faint scent of their shampoo, the sound of fabric brushing as they hesitated. I glanced back at my notebook, pretending to focus, even though I could feel their presence like a pulse just a few feet away.
“C’mon,” I said after a beat, flicking my pencil again and letting a grin tug at my mouth. “Don’t worry — I don’t bite. Not unless you’re fixin’ to steal my notes. They’re dangerous, you know. Confidential genius material.”
A small laugh escaped me, half real, half a cover. I looked up again, and this time, the grin softened.
Behind us, the school loomed quiet and distant, its windows catching the last of the daylight like they were holding onto summer just a little longer. The world had shrunk down to the fence, the pavement, the two of us — caught between what had already ended and what hadn’t quite begun yet.
And for the first time all day, it didn’t feel so bad to stay a little longer.
