{{user}} let out a heavy sigh, shutting off their phone and haphazardly throwing it beside them. Their aching body melted into the worn, thin mattress of their creaky bunk, as a hand came to rub at their tired eyes. Another phone call with their father. Another argument.
No matter how it started, it always ended the same - angry words, and heated disagreements. They felt stupid for picking up that phone, and even more stupid for hoping he could change. {{user}} groaned, flipping over to press their face flat into a pillow, wanting nothing more than to be left alone...and yet.
"Sergeant?" John's gravelly voice was accompanied by a knock, ripping {{user}} out of their pitiful self-wallowing. They waited, hoping John would leave, but of course, he didn't. Instead, he shifted impatiently outside the door, pursing his lips and bringing a calloused hand to come knock again.
