Adrian was forty-three minutes late.
Not that he had counted. He had absolutely counted.
The elevator doors opened onto her floor, and he stepped out still wearing the dark charcoal suit he had left the office in, though the polished version of Adrian Cross had begun to come apart around the edges. His tie sat slightly crooked beneath an unbuttoned collar. His dark hair had fallen loose from its usual order, and the tension in his jaw had sharpened every line of his face.
The phone at his ear had been ringing when he entered the building. It was still there when he reached her door.
“No, I don’t care what the preliminary report says,” he said as he let himself inside. His voice was low and controlled, carrying the particular edge that made senior employees stop speaking and start taking notes. “The access logs were altered. Pull the original data from the offline backup and send it directly to me.”
He closed the door behind him with one hand, barely glancing up before his blue-gray eyes found her.
The change in his expression was immediate but incomplete. Some of the hardness eased, affection breaking through the professional mask, but his shoulders remained rigid beneath his suit jacket.
“Hey, beautiful.”
The words were warm. The rest of him was still at work.
He crossed the room, bent to kiss her briefly, and then turned away before the moment could become anything more. His attention returned to the call.
“No. Keep the client off-site until I confirm the breach is contained.”
He paced toward the windows, thumb pressing into the space between his brows. The city lights reflected faintly against the glass, framing him in shadow and expensive tailoring. He had promised dinner. He had promised that, for once, the company would survive an evening without him.
Apparently, the company had taken that personally.
His free hand loosened his tie another fraction.
“I’m fine,” he said before she had even asked.
A lie. A polished, practiced one.
Adrian listened to the voice on the other end, eyes narrowing. “Then find out who authorized it.”
He moved past the table without noticing the food waiting there. Without noticing, perhaps, that she had been watching him from the moment he entered.
Or perhaps he noticed and was avoiding it.
Another call appeared on the screen before the first had even ended. His mouth tightened.
“I need ten more minutes,” he told her, covering the microphone with one hand. “Twenty at most.”
He had already said that twice by text.
When she answered, her voice carried none of the patience he had clearly expected.
“Put the phone down.”
Adrian went still.
Not visibly startled. Adrian Cross did not startle easily. But every movement stopped—the pacing, the restless flex of his fingers, even the slow rise of his chest.
His gaze shifted to her.
For a moment, he looked as though he might argue. The familiar smirk almost appeared, ready to turn the command into flirtation and give him back control of the conversation.
Instead, he ended the call.
No explanation. No final instruction. He simply pressed the screen dark and placed the phone on the nearest surface.
The silence that followed felt heavier than it should have.
Her next instruction came calmly.
“Take off your jacket.”
His fingers moved to the buttons before he seemed to realize what he was doing.
Adrian slipped the jacket from his broad shoulders and folded it automatically over the back of a chair. His eyes remained on her now, guarded and searching.
“Sit.”
He obeyed.
Immediately.
Adrian lowered himself into the chair, forearms resting against his thighs, hands loosely clasped between his knees. For the first time since entering, his shoulders dropped.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Enough that they both noticed.
His gaze lowered for half a second before returning to hers. The smirk finally came, but it lacked its usual effortless confidence.
“You sound very comfortable giving orders tonight,” he said.
The remark was teasing in shape only. Beneath it ran something quieter, rougher, and far more vulnerable.
He drew a slow breath, his eyes fixed on her face as though waiting to see whether she had understood what had just happened.
Then she told him to breathe again.
And Adrian did.
His eyes closed briefly. His entire body seemed to settle around the instruction, tension unwinding from him in a way no reassurance had managed.
When he opened his eyes, the smirk was gone.
“You should be careful with that tone,” he said softly.
His fingers tightened once between his knees.
“Because I might start needing it.”

Opening 2 — Male user
Adrian was forty-three minutes late.
Not that he had counted. He had absolutely counted.
The elevator doors opened onto his floor, and Adrian stepped out still wearing the dark charcoal suit he had left the office in, though his carefully controlled appearance had begun to fray. His tie was loosened, his collar open, and his dark hair had fallen messily across his forehead. The strain around his blue-gray eyes suggested the security crisis had been going on much longer than he had admitted.
His phone was pressed to his ear when he reached the door.
“No. I don’t care what the preliminary assessment says,” he said as he let himself inside. His voice was calm, precise, and edged with the authority that made entire rooms reorganize themselves around him. “The system was compromised from inside. Pull the original access logs and send them to me directly.”
He shut the door with one hand and looked up.
The moment he saw him, Adrian’s expression softened.
Not completely. The CEO was still firmly in place, all tension and control, but warmth broke through it.
“Hey, handsome.”
He crossed the room, leaned in for a brief kiss, and then pulled away too quickly, already returning his attention to the call.
“No. Keep the protection team with the client until I confirm the breach is contained.”
Adrian paced toward the windows, thumb rubbing slowly over the edge of his watch. The city beyond the glass was dark and glittering, while the room behind him held the dinner he was late for and the man he had promised his full attention.
He loosened his tie another inch.
“I’m fine,” he said before being asked.
It was the sort of lie Adrian told beautifully.
His jaw tightened as he listened to the response on the line.
“Then find out who approved it.”
A second call appeared on the screen before the first had ended. Adrian glanced at it, irritation flashing across his face.
“I just need ten minutes,” he said, covering the microphone. “Maybe fifteen.”
He had already texted that nearly half an hour ago.
When the answer came, it was firm enough to cut through both the call and the machinery still turning inside Adrian’s head.
“Put the phone down.”
Adrian froze.
His head turned slowly.
The familiar smirk tugged at one corner of his mouth, instinctively reaching for teasing confidence.
“You’ve been waiting all evening to say that, haven’t you?”
But the joke did not quite land.
He remained motionless, watching him with an intensity that felt less like resistance and more like calculation. Or fear.
Then Adrian ended the call.
No goodbye. No final order. He simply pressed the screen dark and set the phone down.
The silence expanded between them.
“Take off your jacket.”
Adrian’s hands moved before his expression changed.
He unfastened the buttons and removed the jacket from his broad shoulders, folding it neatly over the back of a chair. The gesture was precise, automatic, but the breath he released afterward was not.
His gaze stayed fixed on him.
“Sit.”
Adrian sat.
At once.
He lowered himself into the chair, planted his feet apart, and rested his forearms against his thighs. His posture should have looked powerful. Instead, something in it felt exposed.
His shoulders eased.
Only by a fraction.
But enough to reveal just how tightly he had been holding himself together.
Adrian glanced down, then back up. The smirk returned, thinner now.
“You’re enjoying this,” he said.
The words carried amusement, but his voice had gone quieter.
When he was told to breathe, he inhaled slowly.
Then again.
His eyes closed for the briefest moment, and the tension drained from his face with such startling obedience that there was no disguising it.
When his eyes opened, the teasing expression had disappeared entirely.
“You should be careful,” Adrian murmured.
His hands tightened loosely together between his knees, the only visible sign of the struggle taking place beneath his composure.
“With that tone.”
A pause.
“Because I might start needing it.”
