Shane Maguire

Basic Information

  • Full name: Shane Maguire
  • Portrayed by: Wilson Bethel
  • Series: Untamed
  • Occupation: Wildlife management officer at Yosemite National Park
  • Former occupation: United States Army Ranger and military sniper
  • Residence: Lives alone and largely off the grid in the Yosemite wilderness
  • Affiliation: Secretly connected to an underground drug-smuggling operation inside the park

Appearance

Shane is a tall, lean, and athletic man with the rugged build of someone accustomed to military training and physically demanding outdoor work. He has short, slightly tousled blond hair, hazel eyes, light skin, and defined facial features. He often wears light facial stubble, contributing to his rough and weathered appearance.

His clothing is practical and suited to the wilderness rather than fashion. He typically wears:

  • Faded work shirts and fitted T-shirts
  • Durable outdoor jackets
  • Cargo or work pants
  • Heavy hiking boots
  • Wildlife-management or park-service gear
  • A rifle and other hunting equipment when working in remote areas

He carries himself with quiet confidence and rarely appears uncomfortable in the wilderness. His relaxed posture can be misleading because he is almost always alert and prepared to become violent.

Personality

Shane is solitary, intimidating, and fiercely independent. He prefers living away from civilization, where he can operate according to his own rules without supervision. His military experience has made him disciplined and observant, but his isolation has also caused him to develop a warped and increasingly flexible sense of morality.

He is frequently described as casually cruel. Shane can threaten, provoke, or hurt someone without showing much emotion afterward. Rather than openly losing his temper, he usually maintains a cold, controlled demeanor that makes his violence feel calculated.

He is also:

  • Secretive: Reveals very little about himself or his activities
  • Self-reliant: Trusts his own instincts and abilities above anyone else
  • Territorial: Treats the wilderness as his personal domain
  • Provocative: Deliberately needles Kyle Turner and tests his patience
  • Observant: Quickly notices changes in his surroundings and other people’s behavior
  • Morally detached: Is willing to hunt and kill people when he believes the circumstances justify it
  • Dangerously calm: Rarely appears frightened, even during confrontations
  • Pragmatic: Focuses on survival and completing the task in front of him
  • Feral: Years of isolation have distanced him from ordinary social rules and expectations

Despite his threatening behavior, Shane is not needlessly loud or theatrical. Much of his menace comes from how comfortable he appears around weapons, danger, and death.

Skills and Abilities

Shane’s background as an Army Ranger makes him extremely capable and dangerous. His skills include:

  • Expert marksmanship and military sniping
  • Hunting and tracking people or animals
  • Wilderness survival
  • Navigating remote and difficult terrain
  • Using trail cameras and surveillance equipment
  • Concealment and camouflage
  • Hand-to-hand combat
  • Setting ambushes
  • Handling rifles and other firearms
  • Remaining calm under pressure
  • Understanding animal behavior and wildlife management
  • Moving through Yosemite without being easily detected

Shane knows the park’s isolated trails, abandoned areas, caves, and hidden routes exceptionally well. This knowledge allows him to disappear into the wilderness and operate beyond the reach of ordinary law enforcement.

Background

Shane previously served as an Army Ranger and military sniper. After leaving the Army, he became a wildlife management officer at Yosemite National Park. Rather than living near the park’s ordinary community, he chose an isolated existence deep in the wilderness.

He has a tense history with National Park Service investigator Kyle Turner. The two men understand how dangerous the other can be, and their interactions are marked by hostility, suspicion, and personal resentment. Shane frequently taunts Kyle and seems to enjoy reminding him that the park contains secrets even he cannot control.

Shane eventually became involved with Yosemite’s criminal underworld, including an underground operation trafficking drugs and pills through remote sections of the park. His knowledge of the wilderness made him useful to people who needed to move contraband without attracting attention.

Role in Season One

Shane becomes a suspect during Kyle Turner and Naya Vasquez’s investigation into the death of Lucy Cook. His connection to the park’s drug operation, military background, tracking abilities, and recorded interaction with Lucy make him appear capable of her murder.

Although Shane is involved in serious criminal activity, he is not responsible for Lucy’s death. His greater connection to Kyle concerns the disappearance of Sean Sanderson, the man responsible for the accidental death of Kyle and Jill Bodwin’s son, Caleb.

Jill secretly hired Shane to find and kill Sanderson. Shane had obtained trail-camera footage connected to Caleb’s death and used his tracking and military skills to carry out Jill’s revenge. His involvement in Sanderson’s murder contributed to the secrets, guilt, and mistrust that ultimately destroyed Kyle and Jill’s marriage.

When Kyle closes in on the truth, Shane attempts to kill him. Their conflict ends in a violent shootout, during which Shane shoots Kyle before Naya Vasquez kills Shane.
